Default Prior owner Splashed Paint On Tailgate

This new to me 2006 Supercab is totally clean-except the prior owner splashed white house paint on the tailgate...and let it dry. Two spots one about 3"x5"" one 2"x5. Looks like he set a can of houseplant on the tailgate, splashed some stirring and left the paint(!) Truck is dark gray.

(Must have loaned truck to his brother-in-law LOL)

What do you suggest? A fix to get rid of this and scratch proof the tailgate-- I want to use the tailgate when parked under my carport as a sort of work table.

Have thought about a Herculiner on the tailgate. Or Rust Oleum?

Or go to a Rhino installer?

I plan to leave the bed as is-original painted steel.

Thank you for your help.

If it is house paint it should be latex paint - a paint remover like Oops or Goo-Gone will likely remove all or most of the paint without hurting the factory finish as long as you don't scrape it with something hard. Work at it with a plastic body putty blade or something similar after it has set for a while. This will not help scuff-proof the tailgate, though. Some type of spray-on bed liner seems like a good idea. Or just cut a thin piece of plywood to set on it when working (if you get the paint cleaned up otherwise).

Good luck!

Thank you! I got some Goof Off which approximates Goo-Gone paint pal. The tailgate looks great. Ok, not new, but no paint.

And I like the wood idea-do not really want o spend more $$ on the truck right now-wife is still getting over the purchase....
