Default Can bedliner go bad?? I need a chemist!!

Long story short.. my wife bought me a tinted Monstaliner kit for my birthday 3-4 years ago and NEVER used it!! The kit has been sitting in my basement unopened and unused for all those years.

Yes dumb on my part but i knew my bed was rough (i didn't discover how rough until about month ago) and i didn't want to waste it.

I called monstaliner and despite what there site says ("shelf life of 12 months") they said it could hold up for a coupe years ..unused. Monstaliners advice was to open it and see if its separated and to see how bad it smells. If it smells really really bad or if it appears separated then its spoiled.

Now i am not trying to second guess monstaliner but how does a bedliner spoil??

I asked if there was anything i could do if it had separated and they said "no".

I am waiting until tomorrow to give it a look

From some of the things I've seen they make those things out of I would assume the spoil is more or less the chemical reaction intensity is severely altered or changed in such way that actual application MAY not have the original appealing aesthetics or longevity/durability as intended.

I found out a lot of the bedliner's like LineX and especially the more rubberized ones like Rhino Liner actually when exposed to higher heat temps give off toxic fumes. I havent done it yet because i am in the middle of setting something up with the company itself to become a vendor but i have found a material like LineX where you can build it up in layers that is not only Non-toxic but safe for the environment altogether. Its mostly meant as a interior audio sound deadening material but it has many uses and applications to be had.

My curiosity has been peeked most specifically because of my topper becomes a living space and I'm in near 120* temps a couple months of the year and the health concerns really made me rethink a few things.

By next month i may have something more to report and I'll surely add it into my build thread for reference.. we'll see how it turns out.

Yes, just like paint, bed liners have stabilizers, elastimers, and other chemicals that keep it in a form to be sprayed on. Those chemicals break down with time/heat. Spoil is probably not the correct term, but one they use since it makes sense to most people.

No matter what your time is worth way more than a new kit.

If the product has exceeded the recommended shelf life do not use it.

Many years ago I briefly sprayed bed liners for a living, and there is no job worse than trying to remove a failed bedliner application.

You might be able sell the unopened and unused kit with a warning that it has expired and let someone else take a chance.

I'm curious on that LineX thing, what kind of rust/corrosion issues can occur with a liner like that?
What kind of cost etc.

well, i opened up the cans and the contents were in good shape. had to stir up the base material but it gelled nicely. Didn't stink other than chemical smell.

really tempted to use it but i am on the fence. yes i understand chemicals break down. i wish there was away to know. by the sounds of it i shouldn't risk it

damn

I don't think you'll have a problem based even on their own advice.

The problem would be separation and 'decay' - remixing settled contents isn't an issue, but if the seal on the container had failed, it would have started the reaction off, it doesn't sound like it failed.
