Default Weatherproofing tailgates?

Search function didn't find me anything for this one.

So I have an 04 ranger with a (now) leak free leer canopy while I still have water, dust and sand blowing in through my closed tailgate that I'm trying to stop from happening. It doesn't seem like our tailgates lend themselves well to weatherproofing by kits sold by truxseal or similar... Anyone find a good way around this?

Thanks

When I bought mine (used) it came with a not-great weather sealing on the tailgate from the old owner. I'm guessing the only way to get it 100% (or even anywhere close) would be to craft your own using rubber, foam and adhesive.

An auto body supply store may be able to suggest some kind of weatherstripping that could help. You could also search around the hardware store, try for some peel & stick weatherstripping.

It's a truck, if you wanted weatherproof you should have bought a suv

Do you want to weather proof it or are you trying to waterproof it? I might be able to help get you started

I'm just looking to prevent rain water/splash water from coming in, not waterproof anything. I usually have a bed rug in the back when I'm hauling band equipment around or mattress when I'm on the road or just truck camping and it absorbs any water that trickles in. Trying to maintain the functionality of the tailgate whatever I do.

I've Purposely drilled and cut two 2.5" x 5" holes in the forward bed firewall like all the newer Ford trucks come with as well keep a lot of overlanding gear in the back. I dont get water in even when its over 30" deep. However, nothing ive done limits any original functions of my bed or tailgate even.

I'll post some pics up in the next day or two explaining in more details. I though for the moment you might get a kick out of these vids of my truck running through some deep water..

Haha, sweet! Well, I'm not necessarily looking to do anything that extreme...and getting off track here but if I was doing something like I'd be more concerned about hydrolocking the 4.0. Is that with the stock airbox and filter?

Checked out your build in your profile. Nice job!

I'm not sure I'd call that extreme, I went though deeper stuff in downtown Charleston when it would flood. Never hydrolocked my 4.0

Right. I guess you'd have to come up above the headlights before really having to worry.

Yes Sir, factory Airbox, K&N drop in..

Yea sadly my buddies 2nd gen 4Runner 4x4 didnt make it 20 yards into the stretch of it. didnt hydrolock it but we pulled all the plugs out, cranked her over with the coil disconnected, ejected the water out of the cylinders. Then proceeded to put new plugs in, change out the oil and filter, air filter, and shortly there after we breathed life back into her.. lol

but im sure he thought if my 2wd makes it he would... lol sadly it cut short our 162 mile trail run at 88 miles in due to lack of enthusiasm after that. We still had 2 more watercrossings.

----------

and personally, theres no such thing as "luck".. Luck is preparation meeting opportunity. plan for worse and handle everything that follows it
