If you grab a 30/40 amp relay and hold it in your hand so as the only pin that runs straight up and down faces you (30) you can start at the right side pin (85) and call it "in" [from your switch on/under the dash], 30 is "hot" and should come from the battery or a more direct source of 12 volts, pin 86 is now "ground" and the top pin (87) is "out".
Pin 87a will not be used.
There are multiple creative ways to pass wires back and forth for a clean job, my diagram is for explanation procedures only.
If you go through my build link [in my signature] both early on and most recently you can see where I mounted and wired up some switches before I got the lights I recently installed and see what I did for this.
Some people wouldn't go through as much hassle whereas others would consider me even lacking but its sometimes good to see some examples of what you're planning to do before tackling it.
I'm also sure a search on here may bring other perspective installs or methods to consider.. maybe even some shortcuts that work well.

NOTE:: Just a short note, pin 85 or 86 are virtually interchangeable so long as have one as an input and a ground.
