Default e-brake Question

My emergency brake will not hold tight when I accelerate, even the slightest bit. I can't find any info on adjusting them.
They don't self adjust ,do they ?
2010 ranger 4x4 sport ,auto .
Any help would be greatly appreciated .

Thanks, John M

Why are you using your parking brake while accelerating?

Smile Re: e-brake Question

minun,

I apply the e-brake , while stopped ,safe and secure in my driveway. Then I gas it , to see if the brake holds firm ,and not allow the truck to advance.
This is safer, than applying the brake, while going 50 miles per hour, down the highway. If the brake holds firm,in this test ,then it will slow or stop the vehicle in case of an emergency . That is why , I do dat.

Using your emergency brake every so often , keeps it free and loose.
An unused e-brake can rust up and seize. You might be able to apply the brake with your foot force applied ,but it might not release its hold completely, causing drag=friction=heat=A major repair bill.

Bottom line : in case of EMERGENCY be prepared.

Yours in Christ , John M

Oh, just to test it. I see. Somehow I thought your post meant that you were using it in traffic for some reason.

I'm a big believer in keeping the E-brake functional - early this spring I had to manually adjust mine as it wasn't keeping the truck stopped on even a slight hill - and mine's a manual, so I really need it.

For the record...it's a PARKING brake. Hence the big red P on the dash. It's meant to be applied when you park and before you remove your foot from the brake to keep stress off of the transmission. And/or prevent the vehicle from rolling away in the event of a transmission failure.

----------

But, yes. It can be used in an emergency situation, doesn't alter its name or initial intent though.

there is no such thing as an E-brake. you should NEVER use it to actually stop you're vehicle. that has bad idea written all over it. the rear axle only does about 30% of the total braking, so if your trying to stop in a hurry, the P-brake is the last thing you should use. you'll just lock up the rear wheels and slide into whatever is in front of you.

Smile E-brake ?

Thanks to everyone for their input .
So if my brakes quit working ,these are my choices:
#1 Drive up the closest embankment
#2 Jam it in reverse, and gas it
#3 flip it onto its top ,let it skid to a halt
#4 ( This is my first choice ) Spin the truck around ,do a one eighty,
And stomp on the throttle.

I'm going out right now and try these 4 choices out.

I will report with the results. Or maybe my next of kin will report.

IF you throw it into reverse if your transmission doesn't break you can break a driveshaft and then you got a pole vaulting situation if it breaks at the yoke near the transmission.

You have an automatic so switch it out of O/D to go down to drive with engine braking then to manual 2nd and then 1st. Then apply the PARKING break slowly.

Since everyone is throwing ideas into this, I will too.

The parking brake isn't for an emergency? I politely disagree and here's why.

I keep a tow strap for in my truck for engine failures. In 40+ years of driving, I've been towed home by friends several times. I've towed many people as well.

While being towed like this, the REAR VEHICLE, must apply the stopping power for both vehicles. This keeps you from crashing into the rear of your friend.

It take two people paying extreme attention to pull this feat off. Keep the line tight so no vehicle gets injured. Front driver, never touch your brakes. The man in back has to look hundreds of yards ahead and anticipate everything that could go wrong and brake way early, if necessary.

If that doesn't absolutely define an emergency brake, I'd love to hear a better explanation.
