Winch Wire Cable to Synthetic Rope
Hey guys,
So its been a couple years since I bought my Warn Zeon 8 with the 100ft of 5/16'' Wire Cable and Ive finally decided to try out the Spydura 3/8'' 100ft synthetic rope(if plausible).
Ive done a lot of lurking on forums and couldn't find all of my answers and hoped to settle them here.
For one, I'm already aware that I will need to switch to a fairlead hawse, that's a MUST.
My two MAJOR questions that I had were as follows:
1. Will my current drum(having been used with wire rope) be too abrasive for the synthetic rope and cause harm to the rope? Will the wire cable being run on and off the drum make it too abrasive for the synthetic rope?
2. Where is the brake located on the Warn Zeon 8? The diagram on the manual does not show a Warn Zeon and so the location of the brake on the manual is possibly inaccurate. Reason I ask is because in my research I found that brakes located inside the drum tend to build up heat of sometimes exceeding 150 degree F. Would this be an issue with the Zeon 8? I would imagine it wouldn't be since it also comes in the option of buying it with synthetic, but might as well try to be safe if I can help it.
Any additional concerns I should be aware of?
Thanks for reading this and all responses, always greatly appreciated!!

You need a rope fairlead
File down any burs. make sure you have no sharp edges on the drum from the cable
You should have a heat shield cover for Rope

Thats what I was thinking could be an option just smoothing out the drum, wasnt sure if anyone else has done that. I know the Spydura Rope comes with a high temp resistant sleeve on the first layer, wasnt sure if that would be sufficient.

Those zeons are junk I'll do you a favor and take it off yours hands . You could possibly get a flapper disk for an angle grinder and go over any burs on the wheel and anywhere else.

Im fairly confident this winch will outlast my poor Ranger! I plan to swap it over to my next vehicle when I that day comes, but for now I love it on my Ranger! I think thats what I plan on doing, maybe taking some finer grit paper afterwards as well to make it like new again, its worth it when the rope costs $300.. lol

lol that's the only reason I haven't up graded to the rope lol to pricey for something I use MAYBE once every 2 months

I've wanted one of those zeons sense they first came out but I couldn't afford almost a grand on a winch, with that being said my little vr8000 does a damn good job when I do use it

Thats good to hear! That was my other option if I didn't go with the zeon, Im sure it works just as well! I think my only true reason I went for the zeon is because I LOVED the new look and simplistic setup, its great and easy to work on if I need to take it apart. And its weather resistance is fantastic.

Still rockin the $300 harbor freight winch. I had to replace the crappy galvanized cable though. The price for the synthetic rope was more than the damn winch. Lol. I got a new cable made at a local wire rope and sling shop for $100. Much better quality than the stock junk. I keep it oiled and it has help up like a champ. I also built a tensioner plate to keep it from getting all messed while free spooling.
