The issue come if you get into an accident and kill someone. You at that point would be facing manslaughter charges.

they might bump it up to murder 2 since he knowingly went beyond the vehicles safety limit.

Re: Adding a tow package. Too many options. Help me please.
As far as a trailer for a ranger goes, I wouldn't try to haul anything bigger than a 6x10. However it's worth noting I don't even own a trailer nor have I towed before; but that's my own personal limit.
As far as your wiring goes, for a 6x10 or less you should only really need 'flat four' wiring, and that's for lights and nothing more. However there's nothing stopping you from getting a seven pin and adding trailer brakes. If/when I get a trailer, I'd likely spring for trailer brakes simply for the extra stopping power, even if it isn't 100% necessary.
On a less serious note: does anyone thing the ranger could haul a smartcar? :P

Oooo.. Don't want that ...
I think I should look to buy an older Cherokee, or Comanche then.
I know for a fact, those compact vehicles can tow cars legally and with no problems.

I've ran with scissors before as well - but doesn't mean others should or that I would recommend it.

Thank you both for your replies, they were very helpful.

Adding these items to make my own tow package.
Okay, a class 3 Hitch, 4 pin trailer harness, auxiliary transmission cooler, and a set of spring helpers for the rear leaf springs I think that about does it!
Is there anything else y'all can think of, that I would need?
Oh! I should mention that I only have to buy the spring helpers, I already have all the other stuff. Also, I would like to add that I am not going to be putting these items onto the 95 3 l two wheel drive Ranger for Towing. That's making you happy :-)
Back in April I ended up finding a good deal on a 1993 4 x 4 automatic with a 4.0L. It already had a bumper hitch and harness so all they have to do is add the class 3 Hitch and the transmission cooler that I alredy have, and just buy some spring helpers. I think I'll be good to go after that.

Re: Adding a tow package. Too many options. Help me please.
okay then. Since there are no recommendation for any more equipment, I think I'm ready to add the tow package and will be able to use my truck to tow when I needed. Thank you all for your help I really appreciate it.

Re: Adding a tow package. Too many options. Help me please.
Let's get some better info here:
-Figure out what your truck is rated to tow (as in, weight)
-Figure out what the load you want to tow weighs - this includes the weight of the trailer itself and anything on/in it
The highest tow rating for a Ranger that I'm aware of is 6000 lbs. For a 4.0 Auto with tow package - but yours may be different. The weight of a flat deck trailer and a small-mid sized car could be in the 4000-5000lb. range, or it could be higher depending on the particular trailer and the particular car.
You will need trailer brakes, where I live they're required over 2000 lbs, some places go 2500 or 3000 but I think pretty much everywhere will require them in your case.\
Get a transmission cooler if you don't have one already.
There's no rule saying that you need a 3/4 ton truck, for example, to tow a car.
In fact, new half tons are approaching the 10 000lb. towing mark which is where (at least where I live) to tow more than that you need to have a class 3 license. Basically meaning that all 3/4 tons are nothing more than a waste of money unless you have a huge payload to haul or work in the kind of remote locations where a half ton can't handle the terrible roads you drive (which is almost no one.)

It's been 2 years since you asked for advice and you are just getting around to it? I thought I was bad at procrastinating. LOL

His is rated at 2100 pounds, 01 4.0 4x4 rangers rated at 6060.

Some people are just too poor to do things the safe way. All is fine until something goes wrong and someone gets hurt.
You can never fix stupid.
