Default Has anyone taken out spare tire carrier?

My spare tire carrier on my ranger has rotted to shit, and I was wondering if anyone has taken theirs out? I took out the winch assembly and I noticed that the carrier is holding a white part with a hose/wire attached to it.

Does anyone know what that white part is? And if the spare tire carrier is actually holding it up? If so I could replace my spare tire carrier. Has anyone anyone replaced theirs? Any ideas, thoughts?

Mine is a 2002. My spare tire carrier looks different from that.

I removed mine when I made my flatbed. It's basically just a hand crank winch, nothing special. I used the extra space to mount my 12,000lbs winch. Just don't get rid of the evap canister mounted behind it.

Buddy of mine had the cable type spare retainer on an S-10 long ago. The vehicle never spent any of it's life in the salt belt, and it was roughly 8 or so years old. One day, that cable, due to rust, broke. The spare tire dropped, began to bounce, the bounces got higher and.........the tire landed on the roof of the vehicle behind him. A JokesVagen GTI IIRC and it was nearly new. Something to consider, even thought I believe insurance on the vagen paid (road hazard, unintentional damage of vehicle ahead of him). Just something to know about, especially now that you've admitted publicly that you know yours it toast.

I knew that the evap canister sat on top of the tire carrier. Now it looks like the evap canister attached to tire carrier. If I take the tire carrier out, will I have to put a new tire carrier in there to hold up the evap canister?

I wouldnt remove it completely. Remember that it adds structural stability to the trucks frame. If you do take it out you should weld in some kind of cross brace. My carrier is welded to the frame. Removing it would involve using a blue wrench.

Okay, mine is actually riveted to the frame (2002) I think I can drill out the rivets and bolt in a new one. I don't know how much of a project that will be. Mine is rotted really bad, and I see some carriers on ebay for cheap.

Sounds like you're on the right track. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
