Default Anyone else ever see anything like this ?

Well I got my truck out yesterday after it has been sitting quite a while. I had the strangest thing happen that really bugs me. On top of the bed where bed caps would sit I have developed little dimple marks. I bought the truck new and it has always been garaged. These dimple marks kind of look like hail damage but my truck has never been in hail. I have no other marks on the truck just these on top of the bed. It's almost like some type of sheet metal flaw. I have been planning on getting some bed caps to cover them but haven't decided what style to get. I have the factory bed liner that has the textured tail gate cover. Any suggestions ? Thanks.

I know exactly what your talking about i have those on my bed rails. Its currently covered by my tonneau cover but it almost resembles a weld mark that has pulled in a little but. I think they may have tack welded some supports in those areas and i would guess over time with weight hanging on it they deformed a little. You see that a lot on airplanes after a bunch of cycles the rivets tend to start recessing a bit from the expanding/contracting of the surrounding metal.

Thanks, I'm glad somebody else knows what I'm talking about because this has really had me puzzled. If I just used my truck as a work truck it wouldn't matter but I'm pretty picky. If I could just see some bed caps I like and get them installed that would solve my problem. I live in a small town and there is no place that stocks bed caps. I've thought about taking a chance and ordering some Bushwackers online.

Thanks for your reply and thanks for posting the picture. That is the same bedliner I have, did you order the smooth finish Bushwacker's ? Were you happy with the fit and finish and how they installed ?

Rail caps will only exacerbate the problem and trap moisture.

What you need to do, it bedline them. Problem solved

I'm not clear on what you are saying. Do you mean use something like Rhino spray on bedliner instead of the Ford bedliner ? Please explain. Thanks.

He's referring to painting the tops of the bed rails, where you have the dents at.

I got the textured ones. Just be very careful installing them, make sure the area is clean, and no wax, and you will be great. One thing I would have done if I had known, is buy the ones with no holes for the stake pockets, and then put those in myself. For universal fit the ones they put in are a little on the large side.

You'll see a bunch of the spray on liner nazi's come telling you the drop in liner will cause rust, make your hair fall out, cause erectile dysfunction, cause nuclear proliferation etc... Use what works for you. I have the factory liner in my '07, and my '98. The '98 has almost a quarter million miles on it, has never been garaged, and it has no rust.
