Question What's the best way to fix surface rust?

As you can see the bottom side of my door here is rusting pretty good. Last summer I used some Gel Rust Remover...sprayed a Rust-O-Leum Automotive Primer. Then I painted it with a white Rust-O-Leom paint that was suppose to be rust resistant.

I wanna give it another shot but this time I think I need to use different products...maybe theres a better way to prepare it to start with? Probably shoulda looked for some paint at Advanced Auto Parts too...I also didn't apply a clear coat so I dunno....

Any advice at all would be much appreciated.

I'll prolly be takin the step bars off too and redoing them as well...

Well I bought some dupli color auto spray paint and spray on dupli color clear coat. I think ill sand it down a lil more this time and spray this rust converter stuff first, (this will be my primer). Then the paint and clear coat.

Where is the picture taken from? is it a door or what? IF its the door the rust is probably coming from inside the door the weather stripping is shot.

the only way to prevent rust from coming back is to either sand blast to bare metal or removing the rust infected area with new steel. Sandblasting isn't perfect either the rust will come back in time , as you can get all the rust removed from the nooks and crannies
