Default Silicone Removal

The guy that I bought my truck from used silicone to help hold a rubber protector along the top of the tailgate. I removed it because it was destroyed. Now I need to remove the silicone. I can do so my fingernails(in about a week, lol) Any ideas how i can get rid of it? Would steelwool be too harsh? Some sort of buffing wheel? Here's a pic of my predicament. Thanks.

You could try the erasers that they use to remove pin striping . I t fits in a drill and it should take it off with out hurting the paint
