Default Painting hood

The hood that I have now is all rusted and has paint bubbles all over it. Also te person who had it before me tried to paint flames on it but cut to deep so now it had flames rusted on lol. So I got a rust free hood from Craigslist but I need to paint it. It has a couple little scratches but nothing bad. How would I get started? I want to spray paint it but still have it look good, and I'm not going to clear coat it because my truck is semi flat black. Should I sand down the new good to bare metal and then primer and paint or just sand off the clear coat?

You don't need to sand to bare metal no

So just take the clear off? What would be the best grit sandpaper to use?

btw you don't need to remove the clearcoat...you just have to put a scratch in it for your paint to have something to bite to.

If there's imperfections in the hood I would recommend wet sanding the hood with 600 if the imperfections come out then prep the hood for paint. spray it with a sealer then you can paint as your wish. If your just spraying basecoat and no clear "cuz it will match your truck" that's a no no. Basecoat has absolutely no strength to hold up to anything you must apply clear but to achieve the dullness you can add a flattening agent to your clear coat to give you your finished product.

also if you have some nice self etching primer after you wet sanded it, that should fill in all of the scratches and make the paint adhere better, they also do make semi gloss/flat black clear coat so your new paint job wont get scratched away

Self etching primer should only be used on bare metal, as it doesnt stick to painted surfaces very well. 600g is the way to go, if you don't bust through the Paint everywhere, then there's no need for primer or sealer. 600g wet or dry will do fine.

SEM makes a product called "hot rod black", its extremely easy to use, and most if not all paint stores can get it.
