Bed side panel material?
Hi guys-- I just got my "new" 2002 Ranger Edge, and I've noticed that my magnetic wallet does not want to stick to the sides of the bed. Are the made out of a non-ferrous metal (maybe aluminum)? I did a search online and couldn't find the answer. Any knowledge would help my inquiring mind. Thanks!

Fiberglass. Try to stick the magnet on your hood. Same thing.

^^WINNING^^
Yeah....the inside of your Flareside/Stepside bed is steel and same with the tailgate, cab, doors, front fenders. The bedsides are fiberglass and the hood is a composite 'glass plastic concoction....denser than the bedsides. If you had a normal bed, it would be steel and magnetic. If you didn't have a 01-03 EDGE or a 01-03 XLT 4x4, the hood would be steel and magnetic. 98-00 hoods are steel and 04-12 hoods are aluminum.
Welcome to the world of Rangers!!

Thanks for the detailed list, FX4. I'm sure I'll return with more seemingly simple questions soon.

Not throwing water at anyone, but on my Ranger, the hood skin "is" steel. It's the powerdome hood, maybe that makes a difference. I thought it was composite too, until I got a bunch of little dents from hail damage, then stuck a magnet on it. Yepper, mine is steel.

Take a look at my album, that is an '04 with the powerdome hood that was on it when I bought it new in April of '04. The sales brochure even described it as "Powerdome".

Re: Bed side panel material?
OK, my bad, I thought powerdome was powerdome. This I found on a search for brochures.
2004 RANGER OVERVIEW
New for 2004
Raised power dome hood standard on all trim levels
Nostril grille: horizontal bars on 4x2, honeycomb on 4x4
New bumper valance
Rally gauge cluster
New Ford-style steering wheel
Upgraded cloth seating surfaces
Optional leather seating surfaces (late availability)
Pioneer® Sound Package: 290-watt, seven-speaker system with in-dash, six-disc MP3 player
510-watt Tremor now available with MP3 capability and on 4x4 models (late availability)
New exterior colors: Dark Shadow Grey Clearcoat Metallic, Dark Green Satin Clearcoat Metallic, Silver Clearcoat Metallic
So it is a powerdome, just not like the earlier models, and it is not composite. I had a bug deflector on it days after I got it, and one of the problems of finding one was the question of composite or not, from the aftermarket shops. I then got one direct from Ford, and it was on there until about a year ago. I think the problem had to do with fasteners, it was quite awhile ago.
Guess we are all right!! I got into the 2002 brochure and see the difference appears to be the leading edge of the hood '03 and back was straight, and '04 up were not.

Perhaps I flipped the steel vs aluminum years as I am rusty a little bit. But this post should have covered any questions on the "powerdome" hood versus The Powerdome Hood. See what I did there? We don't really call the 04+ hood "powerdome" because it isn't anything special because every 04+ truck produced got that hood. Not just certain models like the 01-03.

Re: Bed side panel material?
Glad this sparked a discussion...I like learning about my truck. I knew my '66 Mustang inside and out, but sadly had to sell I earlier this year (had it since I was 16 in 1996). I hope to have this truck as long and keep it in as good of shape as I did my 'stang. Thanks again for the info, fellas!
