FF = 'Free Form'
This relates to the reflector NOT being a parabolic shape, but instead being formed to directly create teh desired output beam pattern.
Conventional technology (when the FF was introduced) was to set the bulb at the focus of a parabolic reflector, then use a lens to create the desired beam pattern. The FF lenses (like those in most every new vehicle's headlamps) are essentially clear; the focusing and beam patterning is instead created by the reflector.
