Discussion Thread: How To: Headlight mod for 2001-2010

These directions are the same for the corner lights. If you decide to buy clear corners and wanna black them out also. Only difference is you don't have to mask anything off with the corners.

Tools Needed
  • Oven
  • Flat tip screwdriver
  • Masking tape
  • Exact o knife or razor blade
  • Flat Black spray paint, or color of your choice
  • Glass cleaner
  • Microfiber cloth
  • Silicone adhesive
  • Oven glove or towel

Step 1:
First you remove your stock headlamps from the truck. pull up on the two black retaining clips that hold them in place.

Step 2:
Preheat the oven to 200 degrees. Or the lowest setting possible. Which ever you are more comfortable with. I chose 170

Step 3:
Put the headlamp on the middle rack for 5 mins. keep a close eye on it to make sure it’s not melting. You can use a cookie sheet if you want

Step 4:
Carefully remove the HOT headlamp from the oven. Use your flat tip screwdriver to pry apart the lens from the housing. If at first it does not want to come apart do not force it. Place headlamp back into oven for 5 more minutes.

Step 5:
Clean the "gasket" surface of any left over silicone

Step 6:
Now masking off what you wanna keep from being painted. Take your time doing this. Be sure the edges nice and tight to prevent the paint from running. Use the exact o knife or razor blade to make the corners nice and clean and even

Step 7:
Now it's time to paint. First clean the parts to be painted with some a glass cleaner use the lint free cloth. Be sure there is no debris or dirt, or grease or fingerprints, or anything on the areas to be painted.

Step 8:
Once you finish painting set in the sun to dry for a good 2 hours so when you pull of the tape it wont take the paint with it.

Step 9:
Now putting them back together. Clean all the chrome parts so they are nice and clean and free of any fingerprints or anything else.

Step 10:
Now take your water proof silicone and run a nice bead around the edge where the lens sits.

Step 11:
Place the lens back on top firmly pushing down. Wipe off any silicone the pushes out.

Step 12:
Place headlight in sunlight allowing it to dry. Take your exact o knife or razor blade and clean up any more silicone.

Step 13:

Now reinstall your headlamps into your truck and enjoy a cheap mod.
