Default New exhaust from manifold back?

I have an '83 2wd w/2.3 and 4 speed man trans. When I bought it in Sept the thermactor pump was already siezed and had no drive belt. I believe that a plastic bodied valve of some sort downstream from there has burned in half and I have a rubber hose putting out exhaust noises. My question is are there headers available to replace the stock exhaust manifold? Or can I somehow seal off all of the outlets on the stock manifold? If I do that, how will it affect the drivability of the truck if I throw away all of the "smog" plumbing? There are no inspections where I live and I can hang my own pipe and muffler/s. I just wonder if there are any real negatives to just running a header and straight pipe through a cherry bomb, or two to quiet it down. There just seems to be alot of steel and rubber tubing running to and from the stock exhaust system. Would my intake system need to be updated some how to compensate? Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
