Arrow 02 sensor/check engine light

99 Ford Ranger
XLT 4x4 V6 4.0
Ext. Cab
Maroon

For the past two months my check engine light has been on. I took my truck to autozone and had them check for any indication as to why this would be. We ended up getting around 7 different error codes and the guy referred me to get a diagnostic check for more accuracy. So, I took my truck into goodyear which ran the diagnostic and explained to me that my 02 sensor is bad. And that there would be extra labor involved because they had to take apart some extra muffler pieces and replace all the bolts.. Anyone run into the same problem, or have any tips? Please help.

**If I find the autozone error codes I will post them to this thread.

Without knowing the codes it sounds like somethings fishy, I would just replace the o2 sensor and clear the codes and see if they come back.

I'm all up for getting my 02 sensors replaced, but I just don't understand why it would take them an additional 2-3hrs to do the job? How hard can it be? I know there are three sensors that need replaced. Has anyone ever done this work before?

most of the time the precat sensors are the ones that go. The aftercat sensors just take readings and don't effect engine management. changing o2 senosrs is pretty straight forward. you probably could change 2 precat in less than 30 minutes. they sell online for about $36 each Direct fit ones. I would only get the direct fit ones. You should post the codes here if you can. I am not sure what they are talking about with the extra bolts. maybe you have some busted brackets. or maybe an exhaust leak. just curious did goodyear charge you to do the Dx.
I'll take a guess at some of the codes p0133,p0134,p0153,p0154
plus you should update your vehicle profile with as much info as possible mileage etc.
you confimed that ther are only 3 sensors 2 precat and 1 after cat?

I have changed a few ranger o2 sensors. I just changed a ds o2 sensor on a 3.0. Its a pita to get to. I have an o2 socket that I slid onto it from the engine bay and got underthe truck to break it loose. On the positive side once you break them loose they usually screw out by hand. The ps is easy to get to, so is the back one.

hit them with liquid wrench( this is the best rust penetratior) the night before and the day you are doing them. I heard that if you have them engine warmed up a little they come off easier. similar to using a torch to heat them up.

Goodyear charged me for the dx and never gave me any information even after asking them for a print out of what they found.. I'm not a mechanic but I would assume they could give me this. I'm fed up with goodyear, I could go on and on about the crappy service this particular shop has given me.. And the truck has 130,000 miles. I'm still looking for the autozone codes, maybe I should just got back and have them do it again.

just changed my o2 Sensors on my truck... i only have two b.c i bypassed my Cat... so there isnt one back there... n.e ways ya they suck pretty bad... i had to use a torch and an o2 sensor socket with a air rachet.... sucked on the pass. side to say the least but the driver side wanst too bad. oo i also broke my o2 sensor socket and my snap-on 7/8 longwell.... uhh i hate breaking tools... which leads me to another point... before you thread your new o2 sensors in man... re-tap those holes man.... couldn't stress it enough. 3 reasons... it makes starting the o2 sensors in the thread easier and 2. the messed up threads on your exhaust pipe may damage, your brand new o2 sensor 3. you dont have to worry about them loosening up... ever. b.c when i went to change mine... they were looose as a goose..

just thought i would post b.c you ask and i care!

This is not true at all. If it didn't do anything, why would every car manufacture put one in then? It works with the fuel delivery to make sure that is as close to stoichiometric as possible so the "environment" isn't damaged.

I probably should have put a caveat n there. I will stand corrected if you tunout to right. I have read that some later models use the aftercat for engine management. I still believe that most aftercats are just there to read the info. They do not use the info for engine management, they use it just to tell if the cat is functioning. I am going to start a new thread to clear this issue up. I will keep you posted.

it is my understanding that the aftercat o2 sensor is there to read the info. ie. if the fuel is running rich after the cat the cel might flash reporting extensive misfires, thus protecting the cat from damage.

Lets see what some other people say.

If the rear o2 sensor senses a rich condition, it will send a signal to the computer to lean the fuel injectors out to try and achieve stoichiometric.

Is this true for ecery car manfacured with an O2 sensor? I.E. Does every car manufacured with an O2 sensor use the precat sensor for engine management?
