A Cat is short for Catalytic Converter... it is part of your exhaust system and is needed for emmisions standards

Yes, unless you want lots of noise, bad mpgs, and a motor that doesnt perform that well.

Re: ???? do i need my cat
Yes and no. Yes if you want to pass any form of emissions, no since your O2 sensor is before it so it won't throw a CEL if it's not on there.

Re: ???? do i need my cat
x2 on yes and no. You need it for emission test (no tests in MI!) you dont need it if you want to change the sound of your exhaust or open up the engine. I took them off my 97, did not have any problems. I plan on removing them from both my current rangers when the time comes. But I dont plan on having plow rig loud like my 97, so I may leave them on or replace them, or run 3 mufflers

Well thanks for throwing all of the wrong info out there. Without a rear O2 sensor like the 1993 model truck has, there is no way the motor even knows that it has a cat. With a good muffler he will have enough backpressure to keep the truck happy. It will probably not make the truck perform better, but since its a pre OBD-II truck it will also not hurt performance in anyway shape form or fashion. It will make the truck louder so if thats what the OP is looking for it will do so. It gets a very V8ish sound to it probably has a lot to do with the relatively large displacement for a V6 these have.
That being said it is illegal to remove. Huge fine from the EPA if they somehow found out yours was removed.

If you have to much back pressure I'm it can. That being said no normal exhaust will cause that.
