Re: can i use a straight pipe?
You should look into thrush welded mufflers. Not many people say anything about them and it doesn't seem like they are used on rangers that often at least 4.0s or 3.0s. I had my truck straight piped for a couple months and I noticed a slight performance decline and at first I liked the sound but then I got sick of it at higher RPMs. Once I had my dual exhaust system installed (custom jobby at a local shop) it sounded much better. It was with a thrush welded si/do muffler and duals out behind both rear wheels.
Heres a video of my truck with the setup
(its kinda quiet but I do have another video on my youtube channel of just rev's standing still. feel free to look)
And a 3.0 with the thrush welded muffler.
I hope this helps ya out some!

Soon to come: fender flare removal, tear off paint under them, replace with bedliner all the way around the truck, paint topper, fix window seals on topper, build roofrack for topper, install shit on roofrack, and make the inside of the topper livable.

Re: can i use a straight pipe?
I second the Thrush. I also run a Thrush welded and am very pleased. Usually only cost around $30 or so and sound better than any Slowmaster I have heard on a Ranger

Re: can i use a straight pipe?
Yeah, the OP probably works for the EPA, and now whomever said to bypass the cat goes to jail/fined.

trust me pal, you don't want to do that. It can cause unwanted attention from the sound police and cause you to lose mpgs, low end torque, and it will sound like crap. Here are some photos of my current exhaust system:
This is what it looked like the day I had it installed:
Here's what it looks like today after nearly 2 years and it still sounds like it did the day I had it installed:
and for the icing on the cake here are my 3 exhaust videos:
Basically I spent a total of around $70.00 bucks (+/-) which includes the labor. The muffler is a 28 inch long Cherry Bomb glass pack with 2.25 inch inlet and outlet and I had it dumped about one foot behind the cab. It sounds great and it doesn't drone. Now here's the best part. Because your 3.0 is a small displacement engine and it's not big enough to make this glass pack sound like something you'd hear on an old V8. The only way to get any real sound out of something like this basically is to install it right off the header collector which in most states is indeed illegal. I did that once with a Flowmaster 40 series original muffler and I ended up getting a "police escort" back to the garage on that one.
