Question Trying to figure this out...

I'm trying to figure this issue out before I drop the money on a mechanic... Thought this would be the right place to come.

Im driving a 1990 Ranger 4.0L V6 4x4. A couple weeks ago my "BRAKE" and "ABS" lights came on. I thought no big deal, did what I could to check out the problem, figured it was a sensor issue as so many with my year ranger have had. Anyways, gas milage has been HORRIBLE since my last fill and I've also discovered an exhaust leak somewhere along the way. Tonight driving home my CHECK ENGINE light came on and I figured I'd had enough ignoring what is starting to seem like a larger issue. After doing some reading i'm thinking somewhere along the lines of a catalytic convertor issue? I may be way off, i'm fairly new to DIY mechanics... Anybody have an idea of what it may be? Ill take a closer look under the truck in the morning and see if theres any visible issues. Thanks

how many miles on the truck? Do you feel a reduction in power at all? A clogged cat will cause poor performance and gas mileage, in OBDII cars (1996+) a clogged cat will trip the downstream 02 sensor and trigger a CEL. Even so, a 1990 should have a downstream 02 sensor after the cat. It could be a clogged cat (seems more likely) or a bad 02 sensor. Not sure how pre OBDII computers functioned, but even a bad 02 sensor (meaning the cat is perfectly fine) will cause the car to operate in a fail safe mode, where the computer makes the engine run rich (hence the poor gas mileage).

They pretty much functioned the same really. The only difference between OBD1 and OBD2 is the amount of programs they contain and some of the technology is a little different. Also the emissions category comes into play as well. But other than that, they pretty much function the same really. X2 on the clogged cat. I'd also say his O2 sensors are shot as well. After all of the repairs are completed, I would also suggest getting the ECU reflashed or reset to factory specs so it will quit throwing codes out.

Thanks guys. Very much appreciated. It has 180000 km and everything under the hood is original. I don't know if this helps but my exhaust started to be really loud today. Do you think that has something to do with the codes it's throwing?
