Default After market vs OEM exhaust manifold

Hello all. I have been following this forum for a while but this is my first post. I have a 1990 ranger xlt 2wd 2.9L with 5 speed. I need to replace the rh exhaust manifold because mine is cracked. I took it to Midas for an estimate and gagged over the cost. I have the tools and ability to do it myself so I've been checking and I can get an after market manifold for about a third the cost from the ford dealer. My question is, does anyone know what problems I might have using an after market manifold (i.e. is it going to have all the holes in the right places and such)? I have checked around locally (Portland, OR) and haven't found a used one in much better shape than mine. Thanks for your time.

If you're getting it from a Ford dealer it should be ok for your 2.9. Ford is extremely picky when it comes to aftermarket parts. For example: Let's say you have an F150 and you wanted to supercharge it. Out of a dozen manufacturers only 2 won't void your warranty: Whipple and Roush Performance. Everyone else's including Carol Shelby's supercharger kits void the warranty. That's how picky Ford can be. I don't think you'll have any problems with it fitting and lining up. I do have a suggestion. Look into JBA exhaust manifolds and headers, you'll thank yourself later on for it. And as a rule of thumb replace both exhaust manifolds. If you have a Ford dealer do the job they'll only replace the right side and you'll be back to get the other side done before you know it. That's how they operate. They do that to cut costs and maximize profits. They really go for that mentality when it comes to warranty work as well. They also tend to be sneaky too, so be careful and ask some questions about the parts you're buying.
