Cut exhaust?
I just want a different sound, couldn't I just cut the exhaust a bit, or even disconnect at the cat? Would it sound like crap?

It will sound terrible. I ran around with it off right after the Y-pipe for about 2 hrs. It sounded like a bag of crushed *******s.
Please dont do it lol. If you want a different sound why not buy a different muffler for like 80 bucks?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Seriously, just get a different muffler. I have a Borla and highly recommend it to anybody who doesn't want a really loud muffler. It's nice and mellow with a good sound.

I upped the sizing and took the cat off and made it side exit with a diesel tip on the end. It looks sick and sounds nice and deep, not ricey or anything like that.

I have my muffler removed (no muffler in its place) and it sounds great and I get awsome gas mileage for a Ranger. I average 17.5 with 70% city and 30% highway. The best I have gotten is just a tad over 20 mpg and thats with 33.4 in tire.

I know theres tons of mufflers out there but I want to spend no more then $100, but I want a deep, low tone.. Is there anything out there for that price?
Also, if I just disconnected the stock exhaust, you guys did it at the cat?

Jake, I was commenting on the OP wanting to just either unbolt behind the cat or cut a foot behind the cat then nothing else. Doing that, will sound like ass, will rob power, and suck the fuel. Ask me how I know....I ran that setup between exhaust setups...shoot...even a striaght pipe with 4' of tailpipe and a turndown...still sounded like complete garbage.
With full tailpipes, I don't doubt that no muffler does sound good on a 4.0...I've heard many reports of this, just havn't heard in person yet.

I have a 3.0L, also, the video posted sounded real good. If I take out the cat and put a straight pipe and run just that i'll get bad MPG and loose power?

I took everything out. Straight piped from exhaust manifold to tip.

I went down to NAPA and bought 4ft of 2 1/4 tubing. Cut my cat off with a sawzall, welded the pipe to the exhaust manifold down pipe, and then welded my muffler on.
