Default What to do about bad or clogged cat

Alright, so as you all know, i got four god damn converters. I think somewhere one is bad or clogged. Where should i start.

The truck is EXTREMELY sluggish, it sometiems slows down when you push the gas, and you have to go real slow to get to even 45 mph and after that you aint goin no faster. If you try the rpms go up and the speed goes down. Im running over 2rpm just at 40-45. Can you even take the cats off? Do they bolt or are they welded? And should i just jam a broom stick through them all? lmao

when was the last time you did
  • spark plugs
  • wires
  • air filter
  • fuel filter

do you have a check engine light on? possibly running in open loop with bad O2 sensors

i did half the plugs about a month or maybe a tad bit more ago, air filter about the same if not more recently, fuel filter a less than a month, wires probably from day one.

I got EGR Flow excessive, a P1400 (relates to egr/dpfe), Evap system leak (small) which is probably from the vent extension from the body lift, and a cylinder 3 misfire. But i think that just popped up from me trying to push the engine past 40. No too rich or too lean codes.

your evap line by the driver side shock off? that would throw the evap system leak.

also the #3 misfire would be a problem, also you only did HALF the plugs... um finish and do wires

All this still is gunna fix my power loss though i dont think. Theres a rattle too. I can hear it when the truck idles. Im almost sure its the CAT... I know i need to do the other half though. And my wires could be done too but like i said when have you ever heard of that little stuff doing this to a truck? Maybe bad MPG and minor power problems, but not this.

And whats the evap line by the tower? Is it on the engine side of the tower or more towards the bucket side cause i thought my extension was pretty kosher so you may be right.

there is no extension for the evap line in the engine bay by the shock.

A clogged cat if it was you would have very high exhaust temps. and yes a bad spark plug could cause all this, Fixed a ranger a few months ago that ran like a diesel and it had a cracked spark plug and a wire that the shielding was cracked on.

No i mentioned the extension by the filler, you spoke of something by the shock tower. I was asking what you meant cause im not sure about it. I kinda looked everything seemed in place but idk if its on the engine side or the wheel side? And Yeah, i dont think im running the exhaust that hot....maybe though. The engine temp stays in the middle. Do you think replacing the DPFE could fix this? I dont see it causing this large of an issue.

----------

i guess a first step would be to take out an O2 sensor and see what happens.

The gap in a spark plug being off a few hundreths of an inch could do this to an engine, much less a cracked plug or wire. Spark is one of the main 3 things required to get combustion, kind of a big deal. Plus just pulling hte plugs and looking at them can tell you a lot about how an engine is running. Going through the entire ignition wouldn't hurt, FINISH the plugs and wires, and check/change the ignition coil, maybe even replace the fuel filter too. THEN and only then if its not better move on to secondary components such as cleaning any sensors, and lastly check the CATs.

Alright, ill take a look at the plugs and i understand they are a big deal, but im telling you guys i dont think thats what it is. I will check though since its easier than doing anything else. I got the plugs sitting in my shop anyway. I also just replaced the fuel filter like, a month or less ago.

My GF dad's cat broke inside and clogged the next one on his 07 Taco, he said he couldnt even go 50 on the high way at full throttle- our answer Stake and hammer, we gutted both of them! Obviously this is temporary until he replace the cats to pass emissions. Sounds sick though!

I have four too, my plan is to cut out the pre-cats and weld in straight tubes, leave the main cat before the o2, cut off the rear one, move the flange back then do a straight tube to a flowmaster and dump it.

Id say drop the mid pipe and if stuff comes tumbling out, you have your answer.

Yeah, thats me. If i go full throttle it just slooooooowly climbs to 45 then it starts to rev up and slow down. Im going to replace 3 plugs on passenger side, see what that does, then if it doesnt help it im gunna take out the o2 sensor and see what happens. If that doesnt do anything ill be stumped unless its the DPFE but i dont see that causing this issue either. IDK, too lazy to work today, updates tomorrow
