Default Straight pipe problems... 3.0 v6

about a month ago i put straight pipe on my 2000 ford ranger 3.0 v6 5 speed. and well now it idles funny and when i clutch in to shift the rpm's stay up for a bit then slowly drop. and if i go ahead and shift w/o waiting for them to drop it will shake the truck tremendously, and a few ppl that i have talked to said it is due to not enough back pressure in the exhaust. so i am wondering if any of u have anything on that
