Default 1999 Ranger performance issues

Hi, I have been having both power & mileage problems with my 3.0, stick, 160,000 mile Ranger. I suspect catalytic converter blockage simply because of the age and mileage on the truck. What happens if I remove the converter and replace it with a straight pipe complete with the downstream O2 sensor?

The truck is gutless at highway speeds and the mileage has dropped off dramatically.

I spent a fair amount of $$ having work done professionally, at low speeds it is a "raped ape" but at speeds over 55 it is completely gutless.

What did the professional work entail?

Check your fuel filter and air filter first. Deteriorated performance at high speeds can also be related to worn out spark plugs.

Clogged Cats will usually throw a code and performance will suffer at all RPM's.

I have replaced : new plugs, air filter, fuel filter, 3 O2 sensors, Oil & filter changed(Mobil 1) fuel pump replaced and pressure set (by mechanic) brakes checked(for drag) new battery, Ignition wires checked for continuity and proper resistance, Throttle Position Switch, Air Mass Flow Sensor, and I just installed a new starter today. (it quit) I think there was something else but can't remember at this time. I hope this helps, I am sure there are others that have the sae or similar Problems. Also, I am thinking about installing headers, they did wonders for my old F 150.

Do they make headers for the 3.0? I'd love to drop my cats also, but how does that effect the downstream O2? I just don't want to have CE light on, the bulb is hard to get to for removal/repair.

I found headers on E Bay Motors for about $400, as far as downstream O2 I don't know. I have removed 3 cats on different rigs and each time they ran better.

Wow... that a lot of work. I'm still thinking it's more fuel delivery rather than clogged cat being that a clogged cat would act like a banana up the tail pipe at any speed not just 55mph.

You might want to try dumping in 2 bottles of Chevron fuel injection cleaner in a full tank of gas and see if that helps. If if does $15 is a small price compared to a new cat, if it doesn't $15 isn't all that bad. At least you'll know your injectors are clean. Chevron makes the best, the others aren't as effective.

If you're going to cut out the cat, replace it with a free flow cat. This way, no loss in performance and you stay legal.

Headers are nice, but you need to combine them with a cold air intake to get a decent performance gain. A larger throttle body and porting the intake would also help maximize the header gains. If it were me, I'd forget about the headers and spend the $$ on a tuner.
