Question 1993 2.3 ford ranger rwd

please help me i am getting a 93 ranger and would like to do exhaust on it but as a high school student i have limited money and car knowledge please give me some set up suggestions for a exhaust that will make my ranger sound better thank you i have heard about cat back and stuff ... no idea what that means. do i have to replace the muffler and exhaust tip to get new sound or just the exhaust tip? i really dont know what makes the ranger sound sporty when it has aftermarket exhaust. a whole exhaust system is way to expensive though haha. any tips on products or answers to my questions would be greatly apprieciatted thanks guys

try looking at flowmaser.com, price the setups and listen to the audio clips.

A cat-back exhaust is just cutting off your stock muffler and replacing it with an aftermarket one. Any muffler will work as long as your stock 2" pipe is the same diameter as the inlet of the muffler. Then it's up to you if you want to run a tailpipe (most people just use their stock tailpipe), or just use a turndown right off the muffler (which is referred to as "dumped")

This would be a dumped flowmaster:

thank you guys. i heard if you dont want your 4 cyl ranger to "rice out" at lower rpms you have to run a flowmaster 40 exhaust 2" inlet and than like a 2.5 -3.0" out is it possible to get mufflers like that? for a reasonable price? also i thought a catn back meant removing the catalytic converter? lastly and set up suggestions i.e. like what muffler to get and pipes?

Your in highschool? Go join shop classes that let you work on your truck. My school had a class for kids to learn basic mechanics and able to work on there cars. Called co-op or something. Wish I took it.

Beat the honey comb outta the cat. Sounds and runs better after.

I did the whole exhaust, minus headers of course, because I only have a 4cyl.

It's a magnaflow Catalytic converter in place of the stock one, then stock piping from there to the muffler which I got with 2.25" tailpipe from the junkyard and a 3.5x14" tip.

my friend and i just welded my 40 series flow on my truck yesterday. As of now my flow is just dumped. But i'm planning on bringing the duals out the side of my truck. I think the flowmaster will give trucks a pretty good sound. mine has a good deep sound to it, then when i shift it kinda echos.
You can take off the cat, thats what i plan on doing and then having just the flow on there.
But i heard that will turn ur check engine light on, also heard it may mess with your o2 sensors. I don't thing a tips will add any better sound, it just makes it look better.

I bought my flow for 10 bucks from a good friend, witch is a great deal!

so i totaled out to about 40 bucks to get the taper pipes so i could fit my 3" flow pipe to my trucks 2'' pipe. soo 40 bucks for mufflar, the taper pipes, and the two turn down pipes.

thanks guys! i am definitley not taking the catalytic convert off but i have looked into it and i will probably get a flowmaster 40 muffler and run stock piping in and out of it to a aftermarket tip which is hopefully reasonably priced up here in Canada. Just the muffler goes for about $100 on jb power centers website.

That has absolutely nothing to do with anything.

Taking your Cat off will result in a tremendous loss of power, and affect your gas mileage.

I have a 2.3 2wd ranger with stock header. If anything change out your cat instead of taking it off. It will ruin gas mileage and lose performance. I have 3" off the header into a 3"in/out magnaflow cat and then to a 3" in 2 1/2" dual out flowmaster 40 with 3" tips and its deep and not ricey at all

i cut out my cat and put straight pipe in its place and then cut out the muffler and put a cherrybomb glasspack in its place. with it like this it popped really bad. so i cut off the exhaust at the back of the glass pack and now its a more deep done and screams when u romp on it.

o and removing my cat helped my truck with better gas mileage and power.

and i'm a highschool student and i like loud things. comes to say with my silverado i put dual strait pipe on it and with my camaro it has headers and a cut out then a glasspack and dual exit in the rear
