Default How to avoid ricey sound

I got a gibson extreme dual on ym truck. it sounds good idling and low rpms, but when it gets up to 4000 and up, it gets a slight ricey sound. anything i could do to fix that sound EXCEPT having to put in flowmaster

I thought gibson made a pretty good sounding exhaust. Thats what I was going to get until my brother sold me his Hooker Areochamber muffler, and my truck still sounds like a ricer when it gets above 3 grand. But thats going to happen with any smaller engine, I have yet to hear a 4.0 that doesnt have a touch of rice in it. Just think, its not as bad as a 4 banger would be.

Like vinny said, smaller engines will always have a bit of rice in there tones, you can have the meanest sounding muffler on a v8, put the same one on your v6, and itll sound different.

But also, For daily driving, I never hit 4G. unfortunately mine sounds ricey from 2G, so it not sounding ricey untill 4 is pretty good.

I'll be getting a super 40 or super 44 Flowmaster on my next truck. You can't expect much at higher RPM's, its a V6

bigger pipe and an even bigger tip will take care of ricey sounds. I would say at least 2.5" out to 3.5" tip, but not no short one, make the tip at least 18"

Your dads right. Spend the money and have it welded with mandrel bent pipe, and it'll sound good.

I went with a Cherry Bomb on my Ranger, and I like it a lot. Well, I did. Haven't heard it in 3 years, lol.

My last ranger (1993 XLT) had 2.25 inch pipe running into a flowmaster series 40 dual 3.0 inch out running to 3.5 inch by 12 inch tips. STILL sounded like rice at anything near decent rpms.
The fact is, you just aren't going to get the air volume from a 4 cylinder or a 6 cylinder at the higher rpms to not get that little bit of riceyness.
Having said that, there ARE some nice sounding 2.3's, 2.5's, 3.0's and 4.0.. but they all have that little something at the higher rpms that say... ""Naaa, not quite right"". and of course, the amount goes up and displacement (air volume and flow in the exhaust system) goes down.

well you can get rid of the ricey sound but your going to spend alot of cash like it did. if you run true duals with flowmaster super 40's with 2 inch piping all the way back with highflow cats it will get rid of the ricey sound completely and give you a deep sound at 2500 to 3500 and then everything after that its gets kindof quiet and still droans. and everything under 2500 has a droan to it a very low drone .... and PS its really quiet on the highway. oh yeah also you need a x-pipe to balance exhaust gases in the pipes to keep the drone
