Well when I used to fab mine with elbows and pieces and u bolts the open end is wided already to the correct dia. you just gotta know what size it is your going to or coming from. So for example if you need a 45 elbow as long as it says 2.25 on it you got the right size pipe. If it says 2" or 1-7/8 those would be wrong sizes.
If you need a straight length just make sure it has a widen flange on both ends or you will need to mickey mouse a couple pieces together to get that.
There have been times when I only had a straight piece with no wide end and I had to hack saw a slot and pound it on. But that was back in my beater days.
