If they're going on a 4 cylinder Ranger I'd say don't do it. Glass packs of any sort tend to sound like crap on 4 cylinders.
A friend of mine welded in a single cherry bomb (18" long, 2" ID inlet / outlet) in place of the OE muffler and it doesn't sound too bad. That's on an all stock 3.0 though.
However, at higher RPM's there is still some slight rasp to it. Aftermarket heads will usually add to that as well... Well, for 4 cylinder engines at least.
It didn't really create that much of a deeper tone, it just gave the exhaust a bit more growl.
But again, that's just swapping out mufflers.
