Exhaust cut outs on 2001 ford ranger?
My friend and I are thinking about installing electric exhaust cut outs on our trucks. I have a 01 ford ranger. If this is placed after the catalytic converter would it work and is this the best placement? Or would the o2 sensor trip. Last time I had the exhaust off the o2 sensor prevented the truck from running. Also what tools would I need to install this? I don't have a welder so I would need to have it welded correct?

Man, I have had 3 of these trucks and they are bad a$$ and last forever. Dont put one of those on. If you are looking to get more power out of it, trust me, do a chip. I had one on my '02 ranger and I ran a 15.9 in the quarter. That was from a 17.2 the week before. Also do a cold air intake if not already.

A lot of newer Rangers with the OBDII system don't have a spot on the ECM for a piggy back style E-Prom chip. I suggest you get ahold of Doug Stoddard at BamaChips Tuning. Doug is an absolute genius with the 4.0L and also has some of the best product support and customer service in the business. He has the best ECM tuners in the world hands down.

I've heard more and more good things about the tuning capabilities of Fred @ rogueperformance.com, may want to check him out too.

I've looked at Bama Chips...from what research I've done, they're pretty outstanding. I'd go with a performance chip and the cold air intake. I've already put in a K&N intake and filter, the next thing I want to do later down the road is put a chip in. That's the way I plan on doing it....just my $0.02.

I have the K&N and a Tornado and the 4.0 has plenty of power for right now. I would just like to get the throttle response a bit tighter, and a few more horses I wouldn't mind either.

First off....throw the tornado in the trash. Dyno tests have proven that they actually reduce horsepower across the entire RPM range. I too have a K&N FIPK and if I may make a suggestion....switch your K&N cotton gauze filter for a dry cell foam unit from AEM. Too much oil on the gauze filter will cause all sorts of problems with your MAF. Doug at Bamachips will want to know all your existing performance mods as well as any future mods you plan on for your truck. He will set the tuner exactly for your truck...it will not be a "canned" tune like Hypertech or Diablo will offer. You can have 3 different tunes installed into the tuner and you can pick any 3 you want. You can have either a HP, torque, mileage, or race tune for any octane level you desire and if you aren't happy with them he can email you a new tune that you load into the tuner. Trust me.....Doug is da bomb diggity on the 4.0L SOHC motor.

I just recently removed the cut-out that i had on my '01 4.0L. if you're looking for power, don't do it! if you just want it annoying loud, then go for it, but in all honesty, it gives it a flat spot in the low-mid RPM range which will make it feel sluggish. Get a chip if you want power.. thats my next investment!! Just my $0.02

Hate to rain on your parade but you can't get more MPGs as well as more HP/Torque.
Chip/programmer, shoot an email to fred@rogueperformance.com
CAI: not sure, not enough benefit for our trucks I feel.
I have heard good things about Borla, I went with Flowmaster 40 original for cost and wanted something kind of loud. Someone posted about the JBA system being really nice as well.

Try BamaChips, I was looking at there site (because of the positive feedback that I heard) and i'm astonished with what they can do.
Any of the K&N or MAC air systems will work.
I've been told that 2.5in piping is the best for HP and TQ gains. I currently have a full 2.5in. system with a single chamber Magnaflow and 3in tips.

If you are going to a 5.0 why even bother with the CAI and chip right now???
