Default Leaking exhaust manifold

Hey guys, nothing quite as exciting as anything most of you have going on, but I need some help with my exhaust. I've got a '99 Ranger Sport, and the exhaust manifold is leaking, which is causing the O2 sensor to run lean.

I was just wondering if someone can tell me where I should start. I don't know if it's a leaking gasket, or a hole in the exhaust header, because the heat shield is still intact. So I'm not sure where to start. Thanks.

Update: I found the leak in my exhaust. It's not the manifold, like I thought. There's a small pipe next to the first O2 sensor, and the pipe is broken right where it connects into the exhaust header.

Does anyone know what this pipe is for? What does it do?

Are you talking about the Y pipe? The one that runs from both sides of the engine where it connects to the headers then joins together and goes to the exhaust pipe?

Yup, that's it. The egr pipe. I am finding that it's a bitch to remove, expensive to replace, and a pain to get to it. You can only get the part from a Ford dealer.

So, any thoughts or suggestions? Anyone ever replaced it? Is it threaded in?

Thanks,

This is just info for anyone who has to do the same thing. I live in the northeast so the pipe was rotted out at the collar nut.

So the nut was rusted to the adapter, and the pipe was just hanging free. The pipe also has two small secondary tubes that connect to two other small hoses. One of those smaller tubes had rusted off. There's also a metric/standard adapter. The collar nut on the pipe was so rusted to the adapter that I couldn't separate them, so I had to replace that too. I had to unbolt the EGR valve to get the upper collar nut off, because I couldn't get a wrench in by the firewall.

I got the EGR pipe from the dealer, $69.95 + tax. And the adapter was $35.95 + tax. A bit much, but I didn't really have much choice.

I had a bitch of a time getting the adapter out of the manifold. Once that was done, I found it easier to install the insert first, bolt the tube to the EGR valve first and re-install it, then line up the bottom of the tube to the adapter. The collar nut is 24mm, if I recall.

I don't think many people have to do this, but in the northeast, things rust out quickly, so it's just an FYI in case anyone needs it. If there's an easier way that what I did, please feel free to comment.

Happy Thanksgiving!
