Default Rectangle shaped muffler?

Hello everyone.

I'm sure there is a simple answer to this one but I am confused about the muffler under my '03 XL 4cyl. It's a rectangle "pillow" shaped thing with another piece about the size of a big soup can by it. The old truck had a standard looking CAT and oval muffler arrangement. Is this standard? Is this style quite restrictive? What gives?

I love how the artist attempts to paint a picture in our heads when a simple pic of evidence of exactly what they are seeing would work so much better.

holy shit, I sound like Dvrich2.0
