most durable exhaust brand
Hi, sorry if this has been asked, but most people in this forum seem interested in exhaust sounds. I am interested in a durable cat-back system for by 1999 3.0L V6. I'd actually prefer it to be as quiet as possible, but I'd really like never to have to replace it again.
My truck has 183K miles on it, and still appears to have the original exhaust system on it. The pipes and mufflers still look to be in fair shape, but the rods that were welded to the muffler outer heat shield have rotted away to nothing. The whole system from the flange back has rotated and the tail pipe is in contact with the bed body. Maybe someone has suggestions on a fix for this? Walker makes a bracket that straps around their muffler, but it won't fit around the OEM muffler.
Looking for a suggested repair or recommendations on a brand that will go another 15 years! So far, I'm looking at a Walker kit. The muffler is stainless, but I bet the pipes and clamps are not.
Thanks in advance,
Jim

Re: most durable exhaust brand
After my stock system rotted away on me, I've had two other systems on mine. Seems the best I've been able to do so far is three years. My current system is aluminized, a bit better than plain steel, but not much. On my 150, I have a Borla system, it's all 304 stainless, but I don't think they make a system for our Rangers. If you could find a genuine Ford system, it would be stainless as well, 409 I think it is, and they last quite awhile, just not as long as 304.
Aluminized would be your next best thing. That's the best I can suggest.

Re: most durable exhaust brand
OEM usus 409 CRES and manufacturers have been using that stuff for a lot of years and it lasts quite well. Next step up will be the 304; it's very beautiful but you will pay for that beauty. If you're trying to promote longevity, don't use the aluminized steel, that's stepping back and down from OEM.

Re: most durable exhaust brand
On my 1990 2.9L V6, I have used a Dynomax 17464 since 1998. It has a lifetime warranty. The newer version seems to have a stainless steel tip that is all shiny. For your 3.0 V6, this kit seems to be the proper one: http://www.dynomax.com/single-2-5-ca...d-muffler.html. If you have dual exhaust desires, I do not know who makes a kit for the 3.0 V6. I have Magnaflow dual output cat back kits on my other vehicles. Magnaflow also has lifetime warranty and uses 409 Stainless.

Re: most durable exhaust brand
Long story short, my truck now has a shiny new Walker Cat-back system. The muffler has a lifetime warranty, but I expect that won't be the first part to fail in the future.
I took it to a local garage, convenient to where I work. I had asked if they could possibly weld new hangers onto the OEM muffler, and they agreed to "take a look". Well, after they "took a look", they informed me it needed a whole cat-back system, for which they would like to have charged me $850. I didn't think so. They were going to use the exact same system that I ended up putting on myself. From Rock Auto, it would have been $170, delivered in 2 days. I bought the parts at the local parts place for about $250, well worth the local advice in my opinion.
While I was under there, I discovered a leaking brake line, so I fixed that too.
Happy, Happy! Joy, Joy!

Re: most durable exhaust brand
I just ordered up Walker replacement catback system for my '96 but I went with the SoundFX muffler which is the cheaper aluminized version. Can't go wrong with Walker stuff which is direct replacement and usually won't give you problems when installing yourself.

Re: most durable exhaust brand
I used walker Sound fx a few years ago. It was <$100. Exhaust systems on these trucks are one of the easiest repairs. Grind the old one off and slap it together. 6 bolts in total. A novice can go it done in under an hour. I figure the rest of my truck will be rusted before this Exhaust fails.

Re: most durable exhaust brand
I installed the Walker cat back w/ Sound FX muffler over the weekend, good fitment and sounds nice (for a 2.3 Lima that is). It's got a bit of a deep tone to it idling and just off idle but quiet when cruising.
