Cracked exhaust pipe
I don't remember why they put the flex pipe on 5 years ago when I got a new muffler but I see the exhaust pipe cracked. What needs to be done to fix this? Can it be welded back together? Am I going to cause any problems or damage driving to the shop that is 30 miles away? Truck was fine yesterday, I went out for lunch today and it was very loud. Brought it back home and will take my other vehicle to finish my runs.

Re: Cracked exhaust pipe
That is where the factory connection was, that used flanges and springs to connect it together. They rust away in time, so it looks to have been repaired with a flex union. You can cut that one off and install another one using clamps or weld it in. It won't hurt anything except your ears maybe to drive it to the shop. The shop may try to tell you that you need a new exhaust system. That would be your choice, I do not know what the rest of your exhaust system looks like. Just remember that the shop is there to make money and few care about emptying your pockets to do it.

Re: Cracked exhaust pipe
Just so I can use the truck the next week or two and not risk getting pulled over for the noise, can I temporarily do these three things:
1. Use muffler and tail pipe sealer
2. Use self sealing muffler tape once step 1 dries
3. Use an exhaust tail pipe clamp to tighten it and keep it even?

Re: Cracked exhaust pipe
They sell these flanges designed for this repair. It's like a bolt spring clamp that bolts up to your pipe. They work pretty well. I have one on mine.

If you're going to go through that much trouble for a temporary fix, you should just fix it yourself. A new flex coupler or flange repair kit is relatively inexpensive and easy to do if you can hold a hacksaw or sawsall and turn a wrench. Your method mentioned above will be a waste of time and money. There is a reason that there is a connection there. That is the point of flex between the engine and the mounted part of the exhaust system. Your method will undoubtedly fail very quickly.

Re: Cracked exhaust pipe
Does the beer can method work any better? Cut the ends of both sides and then clamp it down on both sides.

Re: Cracked exhaust pipe
Do those flex unions come in different lengths? I assume I'd need a larger one? Where can I purchase one?

Yes. Ran that on a 5.7 until I had the time to make it right

Re: Cracked exhaust pipe
A temp fix would be a pop can & clamps. Back when I was young I used a choccola can and clams, it lasted longer than the rest of the system.

Re: Cracked exhaust pipe
i used a red dixie cup and duct tape on a air intake in a pinch one time. i'd imagine an aluminum/tin can and hose clamps would get you by long enough lol! BTW, those flex joints are pretty cool. but i've seen them come apart as well.

Re: Cracked exhaust pipe
O'Reilly Auto sells these - ROL Gaskets Muffler Clamp PT# E20ST
They work really good if both pipes are the same diameter
