Default Catalytic converter 2006 3.0

I have started to get the PO420 code. I have had some issues with the engine in the past, backfiring and misfire due to heads but that issue has been resolved. I think all of the issues I had might of caused my cat to clog up or fail giving me the code aboce. My question is how man cats does the 06 3.0 have? I can see the one on the underside on the pass side ( two pipes in and one out) but it looks like there might be two (one on each side) up near the engine that runs into the other cat. Does this sound right? Should I start out just replacing the (rear) cat on the underside? Are the ones up near on each side of the engine just a pre cat or not a cat at all?

Thanks - John

I believe your truck has 4 cats. I would replace the whole unit. It's going to be really expensive unless you can find a salvage yard that will sell you some but they're probably going to tell you it's illegal to sell you used cats which is one of the biggest scams on earth IMO.

Have you done a full tuneup, Techron, oil change, etc yet? You can always try the sparkplug non-fouler trick.

I was told today my 03 3.0 has 5 cats. One off of each manifold, one at the main Y pipe and 2 rectangular ones down the passenger side

Should only have four on a 2003 3.0:

The primary cats do most of the work, they need CO to operate properly , I have seen a lot of Cam Synchronizers failing and causing fuel timing to be off leading to a lot of drivability problems, dirty or defective mass air meters too, and vacuum leaks as well,The cats cant take a lot of abuse, Usually the two front cats (left & right)are the first to loose the ability to store oxygen. If you have access to a tool that has Data, look at bank 1 sensor 2 and bank 2 sensor 2 at idle hot they should stay above .6 volt with very little fluctuation, a little bit is ok, at 2000 rpm they should be virtually steady while the sensors in front of the cats b1s1 , b2s1 should be crossing the .5 volt rapidly

if the rear sensors are switching like the front, the cats are bad
