Default Jba exhuast

I've been using a JBA cat-forward [stainless shorty headers] and cat-back [stainless also of course] for about a month now on my 2002 Edge. It is great!...you can drive quietly when you want or have a nice bark when you want.

Nice power-band now when hit 4,000rpm. I'd recommend this system to anyone. K&N cold air intake and a Superchips programmer I added later...each one at a time to see which made the biggest difference.

Also Bosch Plus 4 Iridium spark plugs and Royal Purple [1st in manual transmission, then the Traction-Lok diff. when I installed the Ford Racing Axle Girdle,..and finally in the motor..R.P. 5W-30 with a K&N oil filter]....I had used for the previous 8 yrs Mobil 1 synthetic oil and when I was close to lugging the motor around 2,000rpm there was a noticeable sound that alerted you to downshift [sounded like the lifters]...this is gone now!

Curiously where I live [S.Ontario Canada] the Royal Purple is actually a little less money per liter than the Mobil 1 and I now see that I wish I had been using it all along. Also the K&N cold air intake does make a rather annoying hissing sound which doesn't bother me thanks to the louder exhaust I now have,..but probably would bother anyone with a stock/quiet exhaust system.

All these things do work well together though. I haven't done it but the programmer does let you raise or remove the speed limiter setting...now with 17x8 inch wheels and matching Fusion 'Car Tires'!!!! I wish I could take it somewhere and see what it could do top-end wise....no suitable place to do it near here though legally....

I think it could do over 120mph easily. Next is KYB Gas-A-Just shocks [had them on the previous Ranger as well as sway bars...it handled like a sports car then..for a truck] and have Hellwig sway bars on order...end result won't be the same as the older Ranger since it was lower and I don't want to lower this one since I can do oil-changes,etc. without jacking it up...

the old one succumbed to rust and the Edge being higher doesn't have the same accumulation of ice and road salt built up under it each winter,...but still give it better cornering characteristics than it has now. Last thing I wish I could do would be to get better brakes....

but there is a sad lacking of things there as far as what you can buy...curious for such a popular vehicle. I sent a E-mail to Brembo regarding this and they said they will get back to me. Certainly though the JBA exhaust system will make any Ranger owner happy unless you want the quietness of a stock exhaust. John

Interesting write up. I also find a very sad lack of aftermarket parts here in Canada. Trying to buy in the USA and have the items shipped here is also full of problems. I am close to a border point and will order parts from an upper NY state store and then go fetch them. I find your comments about the Royal Purple oil interesting also. My truck is a new 2010 and the dealer told me not to run any synthetics until at least two oil changes as he feared that the motor would not "break in" properly. Is this a wives tale? John...where are you buying your Royal Purple? 2010 XL 2.3 5Speed. Dave

Dave I bought a case [12] of Royal Purple 5W-30 at Marken Performance & Restoration in Kitchener. I could have bought it locally [Stratford] but ended up going out of town to order an axle girdle from Ford Racing. It is true that you maybe shouldn't go to a good synthetic oil for at least 500 'miles' on a new motor. A new motor needs a bit of friction to wear-in the piston rings correctly. A good synthetic oil if put in at the factory could prevent that. I don't like driving in big cities and was not looking forward to driving to Marken P & R [Stratford..33,000,...Kitchener..10X that at least!] but thanks to online directions it was no big deal and actually a fun drive there. Nice people and the restoration bit was nicely shown off with a pair of Corvette Stingrays [amongst others]...a red covertable!!...went inside and tryed to not think of it and stick to what I ordered. The axle girdle really looks good....have gotten many comments about it. It is an easy do-it-yourself thing...provided you have a torque wrench to do it right. Your local Ford dealer should be able to get you one. $240.00 or so...when you see it you would expect at least that much [with gasket,allen-head bolts and thick washers[?] for the bolts...even instructions,..and yes it is cast and then CNC machined in the U.S.A.,...not Mexico or China for 7 cents!!! Before I had ordered mine I was reading up on axle girdles at a Mercury Marauder forum....one person said they got theirs with no instructions...another curiosly warned all to not fill the diff. to the top plug of the axle girdle. What I wanted to begin with was just an easy way to drain the oil out of the diff.,..no drain plug with the stock stamped steel cover. You can get chrome ones...still with no drain plug. Stubbled upon axle girdles in my search on the internet. So as the instructions say...you fill the diff. with oil through the larger upper hole...with the steel fill-hole plug[?] in the diff/rear-end removed...and as always it is full when oil comes out of that spot. You have a new Ranger Dave ...you take good care of it and it will do the same for you for many years to come.

Also Dave, and others, be persistant in web searches. I couldn't locate/find many things that I have bought easily....stainless exhaust took the longest to find...but thanks to Google and me varying the wording of my search many times..Google eventually presented me with JBA. This is so with many things. I've noticed over the years that while you may think of looking up 'Buyers opinions' before buying whatever...you must take those opinions with 'A grain of Salt' so to speek. CDN Tire has a good website....people can post their comments on certain products. For example I bought a Betty Crocker kettle [plastic..19.95 or so and made in China] and a Phillips rechargable 'Williams F-1' sponsoring shaver at CDN Tire. If I went from the buyers [maybe they didn't even buy one] reviews...at CDN Tire's website for the kettle...worldwide for the shaver,...I wouldn't have bought either,...but am glad I did. The kettle works great/fast and I am proud to have sponsored Williams...the shaver is OK [I didn't expect miracles] but I suspect a foil screen type like the Brauns may give a better shave. Even the news, not surprisingly, isn't necessarily the truth...even on TV...but possibly some sort of bullshit propaganda. Sadly this may be true as BP's inept stopping of their oil leak continues in the Gulf of Mexico. With such a new Ranger you would be best off taking measures to prevent rust/eventual death of it. Doing so could save you thousands in the future..as in putting off the next vehicle for some years. For sure use the best oils [motor, trans.,& diff.] to that end but rust prevention is actually something you can learn to do yourself and do it way cheaper than local shops will charge you. Don't use old/used motor oil [is illegal and could actually cause rust!..due to metal particles in it]...but a proper rust preventer. Sorry... no advise there as there are so many to choose from and I would be lying if I told you that any particular one is the best. John

John, thanks for the posts. I am headed to the USA for a vacation soon so am making a list of items I want. I have no issue with differentials which have no drain as I have a small "Evac" pump which does a great job. I got it at Princess Auto and it just attaches to my hand drill. Axle girdle......I will look it up though. I'm not close to any large centers here and there are no speed shops close by. I am thinking of making my differential into a locking one. I have been keeping an eye on the threads here which deal with that. Dave

Well I finally bought a HD video camera. Please check out the 15 minute HD video I made 2 days ago. It turned out pretty good and is intentionally long to give a good demonstration of the exhaust sound in daily driving. It ends with 2 different views of my Ranger. John So go to Youtube and in the search box type in CDNJK's Channel.....you should be able to find it easily.
