Default Muffler Question

I'm not sure where to start. I need some help in trying to figure out a muffler for my ranger. It's a 1987 2.9L. Here are some picture of what I have to work with.

As you can see, my exhaust system is limited. I'm also a novice when it comes to automechanic tech. Thanks.

I'd cut the rotted end off, then put what ever muffler you want on it, I think yours is 2.25" in. You can use turn downs right after the muffler for the easiest setup. Most people recommend flowmaster 40's.

Looking at the extension pipes condition. I would not recommend just cutting it off and adding a new muffler to it (that extension pipe is done). Unless of course he wants to lose his brand new muffler on the road somewhere in the very near future. He should definatly get himself a new extension pipe before adding a new muffler and dump / tailpipe (don't mickey mouse it!).

X2 on that. do it right, and you will only have to do it once. you can have the exhaust shop make an entire system for you, or you can get them to make you a new intermediate pipe and attach a system like this to it:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/WLK-17464/

Or have them set you up with an intermediate pipe, choose your own muffler and do a dump or exit yourself.

But the bottom line is that i would not use that last remaining section of pipe. start new

on my ranger that whole pipe comes welded to the factory muffler, no sense wanted to buy a factory muffler unless you want a really quiet ranger.

Yes your right, all factory Ranger exhaust is factory welded one piece extension / muffler / tail. Most (not all) people go to an after market exhaust system once the factory exhaust is finished. After market exhausts sytems are generally all seperate component systems. You can get an after market exhaust that is just as quite or quiter than factory exhaust, if prefered. Your right as well, if a louder exhaust is prfered after market is the only way to go. I'm just recommending people use good condition or new exhaust parts not rusted out old factory parts that are already finished to add new exhaust componets to.

I had two magnaflows on my 83 with the 2.8 v6. Sounded great. The factory y-pipe was retained to use as kind of like an h-pipe on the stangs. My cat was clogged so it "disappeared". New pipe was installed with the magnaflows and chrome "echo cannons" as we called them in Oklahoma, routed at 45 degree angle at rear of truck.

spare tire holder/carrier was removed to make room for this.
