please explain exhaust removal
Hey guys I don't have much money to go to a shop so I was going to do this myself..
First what size piping does my 2002 4.0 xlt 4x4 have..it looks like 2 inch but I'm not sure..
Second I want to just cut my muffler out and replace it with a piece of pipe and put a 3 inch tip on the end while keeping everything els...
Third how can I go about doing this..I can't weld so could I use exhaust clamps? If so will someone explain those to me and how to put them on..
Thanks

My truck is an 04 and it has 2" piping so I would assume yours is the same. IMO exhaust clamps are the way to go because when you weld it seems to just rust. An exhaust clamp just goes over where the two pipes overlap and then the nuts are tightened down. This clamps the pipes together. The only thing with exhaust clamps is you have to get pipes that will overlap so ID of one pipe = OD of the other pipe.

When I did mine I put some exhaust sealant on it but that's not really necessary. Should be able to just clamp them together and then hang it off of something then be good to go

As long as the tip fits tight over the pipe the clamps will work. You can also buy tips that are made to clamp on. They have screws that tighten down on the pipe

Re: please explain exhaust removal
If your exhaust tip is stainless I found that it doesn't allow the clamp to hold it tight. I think it's because of the hardness of the stainless. It could, in my case, also be because I bought a weld on tip and wanted to clamp it. I ended up cutting slots where the clamp goes and that allowed it to pull together and hang on tight.

Dont fricken cut up your old system!!! Buy an exhaust extension from the parts store for $16. This lets you add on from the cat back with out tampering with your stock set up (going back 100% back to stock is expensive) where those 2 bolts make a joint like a "cup and socket". It will save lots of money in the future if you want to revert to stock.

I couldn't get the stainless tip to pull tight with the clamp. I cut a couple of narrow slots lengthwise about an inch long at the end where the clamp goes. That allowed the tip to pull tight. Typically when you use regular clamps they indent the outer pipe so it grabs the inner pipe. No amount of tightening would do that with the tip I purchased. Look at clamp on tips at the parts store. Unless they have the 'built in' clamp you'll see the slots I'm talking about. Mine worked fine and you can't see the cuts.

It will fit without the slots but it may not tighten onto the inner pipe. The cuts just allow the clamp to squeeze the tip to the inner pipe.
