Thumbs up Steel part

Hi,
This is my first time in a ford ranger forum, I have a 2005 4 door 2dw 2.3 engine, looks great and so far nothing wrong with it, as it should be :P, only thing I’, worry about is that, yesterday I made its oil change and found a small steel pice, it look like a half barrel about ¼ and it is steel, have any one of you what could it be? And what can cause if this small part is missing.
