Default Wiring Up the Third Brake Light on Truck Cap

Hey Guys, I am new here and I have a 1998 Ford Ranger single cab with a truck cap on it. It has a two bulb brake light in the rear window. Two wires are connected to it that run down the window on the driver side and they are connected to each other. I tried to see if I could get into the driver side brake lamp as it is separated from the turn signal, but I'd like to be able to disconnect a wire easily without having to struggle with it when I want the cap off. I have an electrical outlet for trailer lighting, but I am unsure if this would be the best option as it will be raining a ton here in Oregon. I do not see any wire that is underneath the truck that I could exactly tap into.

I've also read a bunch of forums, but I am still confused as I recently got my truck and I haven't seen anything obvious.

My ranger had a cap on it from the factory. They spliced in a couple of wires at the left taillight, and ran them up thru the stake-hole, with bullet style connectors to unhook from the cap when needed.

Are those bullet connectors easy to get a hold of somewhere like AutoZone or CarQuest? Sounds like me and my dad could do that.

yes, they sell them pretty much anywhere: Autozone, Walmart, Home Depot. They just crimp on (You might want a crimper tool if you don't already have one)

Just be sure that the female connector above stays with the truck. The male will stay with the camper. Otherwise, when the camper is off and you hit the brakes, that exposed metal tip will be hot, ground out and blow a fuse.

Since the brake lamp function is separate from the turn signals in 1998, you're in luck. Look for a light green wire in a round, 8-position connector near the back end of the driver side frame rail. It is for brake lights only. Ground in the same connector is black. (The same color codes are also available at the subharness connections to each tail light.)

If you have the Ford factory trailer receptacle, it won't work correctly for a CHMSL because it is set up for combo brake/turn lights on the trailer.

Ah yes we (me and my dad) just realized it is the wrong combo for the third brake lamp. Alright so I guess we just need to figure out the right wires to connect the bullet connector to.
