windshield wipers playing games!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ok this one is new to ford and me I have a 97 ranger xlt extended cab with v6 4.0. the windshield wipers work in park and neutral. when i put the truck in drive they stop and in reverse they stop oh yea and it's automatic 5 speed with o/d. i have looked at all the wiper relays and no luck. i have even went and pulled three new GEM modules just to make sure that it wasen't bad at this point i have no idea where to go. with it any advice would be nice thanks.

well just an update I have changed out the control knob for the blinkers and windshield wipers and that was not it but i have noticed that now the dome light pulses when i turn the blinkers on. I have no idea what i am doing i have looked for the ground 103 on the engine block but have had no luck would love any help if anyone else has had this problem thanks

G103 is not on the engine block. It is under the hood bolted down to the driver side inner fender near the starter relay. It is a fairly common for G103 to be loose, corroded or broken. Also check G101 bolted to the upper radiator support near the battery.

thank you for the advice the diagram i have showed it on the block but i was looking at a 3.0 engine diagram instead of a 4.0 I will check that later today and let you know the results thanks again for help

i think i have found part of the problem. I looked at the g101 when i sprayed it with wd40 and loosened it i had the wipers on and the truck in gear while off of course and the wipers started to work but i had two relays in the fuse panel that started going crazy. still can't find g103 on the drivers fender is it behind the fuse box? I think i will keep playing with g101 for now and see. I only got about 45 min to work on it this morning my little girl was not happy about working on trucks today so we walk instead go figure. will post results later

G103 bolts into the inner fender about halfway back on the driver side. On a 97, it should be between the starter relay and the fuse/relay box. If it isn't obvious, look for the remains of the eye terminal under the head of a bolt. Then find out where the wire went.

well i finally found g103 LOL it was under my alarm siren. I feel like an dummy. I kept looking for it and thank you i took a better look in that spot. I still have the wiper problem though i had better results out of g101 so i have to dig a little bit more this is so frustrating I am sticking with it though. it's the last malfuntion i have so when it is done i can start the modding. first thing is the digital ac and heat control love that one. thanks again for the help everyone.

ok now i am completely lost I have checked both g101 and g103 grounds and they are cleaned and makeing good contact and still no wipers in drive or reverse or any other moving gear lol. I know i sound comedic about it but i'm not I am at wits end with it PLEASE SOMEONE TELL ME THAT I AM IN THE TWILIGHT ZONE WITH THIS AND IT WILL END. thanks for all the help so far. everyone

To summarize, you have:

• Swapped out the GEM with a new one
• Replaced the Multifunction (left stalk) Switch
• Cleaned, inspected, tightened G101
• Cleaned, inspected, tightened G103

I looked at the schematics and the only relationship I see between the Transmission Range Sensor and the wipers is indirectly through the GEM. Park and neutral are used to signal the GEM that the trans is in one of those positions before it will allow the transfer case to be shifted to low range. Even if your Ranger is 2WD, it may still have the TRS input to the GEM. The wipers are controlled by the GEM via the wiper relays.

I would try these:

• Inspect, clean, tighten ground G102 (bolted next to the PCM near the center of the firewall)
• Do a GEM reset by disconnecting the negative battery cable, turning on the headlight switch for 15 seconds, then reconnecting the cable
• Unplug the 4WD Mode switch temporarily (if your truck is 4WD)

ok today was a good day! I got out and did some digging and finally got everything working I cleaned the grounds down to bare metal then i got the old alarm that i had in high school (12 years old) working with original remote. now i have remote start, windshield wipers are finally working in drive and every other working gear also. I will complete the putting back together processes tomorrow and take pictures. thanks for the help guys i could not have done it without you thank you very much.

Do you know for sure what actually fixed it?
