Tail Light Problem

I have a 1998 Ford Ranger XLT 4X4, I just bought new tail lights for it, and i cannot figure out what the bottom light does? The old lights went yellow (top), red (middle), and white (bottom). The new lights are white (top), red (middle), and red (bottom). With the new tail lights installed, I back up and the red (middle) light comes on. I turn blinkers on and the white (top) light comes on. No matter what i try, i cannot get the bottom light to come on.

PLEASE HELP!!!!!! :(:(

Did you put it in reverse?

You plugged the lights in the wrong sockets.

Yes, i put it in reverse. the middle (red) light comes on.

it isnt possible for the lights to be plugged into the wrong socket. all three lights have different plugs and will only fit in their specified socket.

Well it doesn't make sense for the red light to come on while your in reverse and the white area to shine when the blinker is on. White usually means reverse, not red.

So the middle light turns on when your in reverse and when you have the brakes on? But if its aftermarket tails the white could be blinker.

But why would red be the reverse? Isn't that illegal?

I don't know, it probably is.

you put the wrong light in the wrong holes, the white is for reverse, the middle red will be your break and your running lights(parking lights) the bottom red will be your turn.

the bottom light does not come on at all. and it has all new bulbs in it.. i don't know whats wrong? maybe its all wired wrong. I don know what the last guy did to it? i guess the best thing to do would be to find a wiring diagram for the 98. anybody know where to find a 1998 ford ranger tail light wiring diagram?

Why did you install the wrong lenses? You should have the same as you described in your first entry . . . amber, red, white, if you want the sockets to fit right!

Re: Tail Light Problem

It can't get any more basic than this! You don't need a wiring diagram to figure this out.
1. Turn on your key, put the trans in reverse. The lights that come on are your back-up lights. Plug these into the white holes in your lenses.
2. Put the trans in neutral. Turn on your left blinker. Plug that light into the bottom hole.
3. Repeat for the right blinker. Turn off your key.
3. Turn on your parking lights. Plug these two lights into the center holes. Turn off your parking lights.
4. Test your brake lights. They will be the center lights! Done!!

Re: Tail Light Problem

but he said the bulbs have different sized sockets and they are all wrong. So he may have to rewire them. Or simply cut and splice.
