Exclamation Gauge cluster and all running lamps not working

Hello, i came to this forum to figure out a huge problem with my 1991 ranger. my gauge cluster lights and all front and back running lamps are not working, but my headlights and brake lights work just fine.

I have checked all fuses and bulbs and have not come to a solution, this is a huge problem because i cannot drive at night, which is illegal.

any help is greatly appreciated!, thankyou

-Justin

have you checked to see if your switch is bad? or possibly the wiring that goes to the switch?

Are you talking about the switch for the headlights? if so its an all in one switch, when you pull it everything comes on. and when i pull it only the headlights come on, and my brake and reverse lights/turn signals all work. just no running lamps on all 4 corners.

the wires that turn the running and dash lights on may be broken at some point along the line... then again you may have already checked this by switching the relay... are the connections to the relay good?

A relay is kinda like an oversized fuze, that controls something...

for example, your light switch has a couple wires running to it. Those wires run to the relay, and the relay splits the signal up and turns on all of the necessary electronics, in this case lights.

When you turn the knob halfway, its supposed to trigger the relay that turns on all of the running lights, the dash lights, and dims the radio. When you turn the knob all the way, it maintains that connection, but adds another one, which triggers a second relay, to turn on the headlights.

Your relay for the running lights may be out.

Under your hood, in the right rear corner (near the driver door) there will be a black box, possibly with yellow writing on it, or with black outlines of writing.

Under the lid, you will see a lot of black or white blocks.

On the underside of the lid, you will notice that it tells you the numbers of the relay. In your user manual for the vehicle, it will tell you which relay is which Find the right relay, and write the part number down. Go into NAPA, and tell them which relay you need, and replace it in the parking lot. Test it out, and let me know if that works.
