Windshield wipers not stopping.

I've had this happen a few times now. I turn the wipers on to do there job and then they don't turn off.

I turned them on high this morning to get rid of the snow from last night and when I turned them off they kept going. I turned them on and off a bunch of times and they then slowed down some. I turned then on and off a bunch more times also pushing the washer button a bunch of times and it finally quit! I was really getting scared it wouldn't go off.

Anyone know why this is happening and how to fix it? I'm guessing I need to take the switch apart and clean it but...

Any help would be appreciated.

ugh... i can relate to you on this one Jerry. My Ranger does the same thing, rarely. When it does happen i just turn the knob alllll the way to the Max and maybe a little more and then slam it back to OFF... and it stops. I think that there are metal contacts in the knob that slide out of place and if you move em back i think it stops it... i am saying "I think" becuase i am not really sure, man. Although i would like to get to the bottom of it right along side of you.

Replace the switch.

I guess I'll take it apart when the snow stops coming down and it warms up a bit. When I do I'll post up what I find.

I guess I could just replace the switch but isn't the switch in the turn signal arm?
Or is it in the steering column and just controlled by the end of the turn signal arm?

Yeah you just buy the whole turn signal switch. The wiper switch is built into it

I took the covers off the steering column. 3 Philips screws. Took the turn signal switch out of the column, 2 torques screws. Took it in the house. Took it apart, 5 torques screws and one Philips screw. Cleaned all the contacts with electrical contact cleaner and lubricant and put it all back together. Installed it in the column and everything is working as it should!

Now for the guy that don't have the ability or know how to remove, disassemble and reassemble this item it can be found on eBay for 35 - 40 bucks. My self, I'm a cheep bast#$d and try to fix anything I can.

If you are going to try to remove and clean your switch there is a cap on the very end of the switch. Its hard to see where it comes apart but it does. It just pops apart. No screws or funny tabs. Use a small screwdriver. There is a screw inside there and it gets you to the contacts inside the lever that control the wipers.

My fix was really simple (10 minutes). I removed the cap from the end of the control arm, then the phillips screw, then the guts of the knob, being careful not to lose the spring(s). The white 'cartridge" with the prongs pulled out and exposed the pads that the prongs ride on. Just cleaned them up with WD40 on a Qtip, then put it all back together. There's been no phantom wipes or squirts for a few days.
