Exclamation HELP! Can's Start My Truck

My truck isn't starting and it is sitting in my driveway as I look at it a little bit at a time. When I try to start the truck all I hear is one loud click and nothing else happens. We replaced the battery with a new one after thinking that my really old battery was a problem but it still does nothing. I tested the voltage from the starter relay and the starter and found that there is current running to the starter even when the keys are out. Is that normal????? There is a lot of crud and gunk on the starter relay so one of my theories is that even when the keys are out, power is still getting to the started by bridging on the crud and gunk thats all over the relay. Is that possible??? and If so will I need to replace my starter if it has been running from the continuous power consumption.

I really need to fix this soon. Thanks for the help in advance!

Your relay may be fused shut... Id take it off the truck and test continuity of the load side( starter side) without voltage applied to the signal side(the other terminals or key side) you should have no continuity on the load side until power is applied to the signal side usually by your key. If this appears correct, put 12 volts across the signal side and see if your load side has continuity then, if so take power away and check to make sure load side is open again. If this all appears correct, your starter may be frozen up, sometimes a couple solid taps on the starter with a screwdriver while someone tries to start the truck will free it up, make sure to chalk the wheels first just in case, if it turns over after this it is probably a bad starter which is somewhere around 100 bucks and is easy enough to replace with hand tools

Thanks for your help! I'll try that this weekend. Concerning the gunk on the starter relay. Could that be bridging the connection and bypassing the starter relay solenoid?

Possibly could be, can't be sure without testing with a voltmeter. If you get continuity (zero ohm resistance if you don't have continuity settings) between the load terminals without power across the signal terminals it could either be the switch is fused shut or is bypassing the switch through the gunk, like you said, if it is conductive and bridging the load terminals together. Definitely clean that off first then I'd try the steps in my earlier post. Hate to say it but it sounds more like a starter with the voltage at the starter being there and still not starting or turning over

Do you have the fender mounted starter relay or just the one built into the starter?
