Re: Instrument Cluster Bulb Replacement
Would a burned out ABS bulb cause my ABS to not work and throw a code B1676? It doesnt light up even when I turn the key. Also my tach just kicks in and out when I hit bumps prolly a loose connector or corrosion. Thanks In Advance

Re: Instrument Cluster Bulb Replacement
The bulb is just a bulb. It's probably loose or maybe a short somewhere that could cause it to throw out a code.

All at the same time? Never seen it done before but can be possible. If you don't mean that, then yes, they can blow out

Re: Instrument Cluster Bulb Replacement
Sorry for resurrecting an old forum but I was wondering if I should/need to sand anything to make the LEDs shine best with the stock cluster gauges.

If you are going to paint the back of the overlays a different color, than yes you would have to sand it off and paint it, then install LEDs. If you just want the stock color look but brighter, then throw in some white plug in LED bulbs or you can be more professional about it and install some white LED strips. The plug in bulbs produces "hot spots" which are random spots in the cluster are brighter than the rest of the cluster making it look "uneven" in my opinion. Take your time and put in some LED strips and wire them up to the stock bulb holder on the back of the cluster.

Re: Instrument Cluster Bulb Replacement
I admit to skipping 2 years worth of this thread.
I have a question.
When looking at the picture of the back of the '99 instrument panel shown in the start of this thread, a circuit board can be seen on the top right that is inserted into the cluster.
What is the function of this circuit board? I have an idea of what it is, I'd just like to see if I am correct in my assumption.
Thanks for any info.

Re: Instrument Cluster Bulb Replacement
STL,
Add me to the list of folks who greatly benefitted from your posting!
I had my laptop running over on the passenger seat as I went through each step you depicted.
It was a "piece-o-cake" to be walked through things like that.
I've a manual '96 and my steering column does not adjust so the removal of certain parts was a bit more tricky. Just some careful pulling and squeezing is all though.
Total time for me was one hour forty minutes with at least twenty of that being the time I took to remove the cluster "lens" piece, clean it, and replace it. Used a #10 Torx bit for those screws and had to be light on the touch as they're obviously not made for frequent removals and reinsertions.
I didn't bother trying to pop the bulb assemblies out with my fingers as I went stright for the wrench instead.
I also did not fully remove the instrument cluster bezel as I left the wiring connectors attached on the left. I simply swung the assembly out of the way and rested it on the door pillar.
No surprises or difficulties otherwise and things went back together without issue as well.
I now have a nice, bright, fully illuminated dashboard again and I'm quite happy with that.
Thanks for posting this set of instructions. It was tremendously helpful!
