I replaced the burnt Instrument Cluster Bulbs last week and now I can see how fast I was driving that night when the VA State Patrolman pulled me off the road. Thanks for the very precise replacement procedure. Pictures even made it easier for mechanically challenged Ford Ranger drivers like me. Again thank you.

Well I am replacing my cluster with a Pooleo LED modded one and I cant seem to get the gear selector back in is there a trick? It seems as if there is not enough room!

----------

Or should I say slack in the line to get it back in...

You don't have the cluster bolted up do you? If I can remember correctly all I did was lift my cluster up wards and slip the gear box in it. Don't loosen up the cables or anything because it's a PITA to get it back to normal (I tried, epic failure 2x) lol.

I finally got it in with lots of cursing and throwing of things...but in the process I did something to the needle cable and I get to guess what gear I'm in!

Very good information on changing the dash bulbs as I need to replace some also, as instructed, they will all get replaced at the sametime. One question, the bulb for my headlight switch is also out on my 2000 XLT, is this the same type bulb (194) or a different type ?

Different

Some are changeable others are not. Like in my 05 I have to replace the whole switch

FYI, the standard bulbs in my 2000 Ranger were 194 bulbs, found out from my NAPA Dealer that the output is 2 LUMS, the 161 bulbs put out 1 LUMS, BUT they also had 168 bulbs that put out 3 LUMS for more light. NOW I can see my guages.

The metal plate is actually an anti-theft device designed to inhibit access to the ignition system wiring. It may also provide some structural support to the dash.

I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to say that this was a great post with the pics. I have a 2003 Ranger XLT and the instructions were spot on. 6 bulbs. $12 and 45 minutes later, my instrument panel now has light. Thank you for sharing.
