Default Turn signals/hazard lights and wiper problem ...

Hello All,

I have a 97 Ranger, 2.3 L, 5 sp and am trying to diagnose my turn signal/hazard lights and wiper problem. I've read on this and other forums how it's a very typical problem and all my symptoms pointed to the switch going bad. So I replaced the switch, and I still have the same problems. I checked all the fuses and they are all good.

Not sure where I should look next. Could it be I got a bad switch? How can I test it? What other things can I do trace the problem?

I also have another problem which may or may not be related. My dome/courtesy lights don't work either. These have not worked for some time. Just thought I would mention it.

Thanks.

I got it all fixed!

There were a couple of problems going on. The turn signal / hazard light problem was most likely caused by a wire I found that was broken. It was the lite blue wire going to the flasher unit. It had broken off at the connector inside the flasher connector housing. I resoldered the wire back onto the connector. But it still didn't work after that. I was left befuddled, so I let it be while I researched some more. The next day while looking out my window I see the hazard lights going. WTF! I go outside to shut them off and see what is going on. Well, I had played around with the hazard switch, turning it on and off repeatidly, and I guess I left it on. But it wasn't working when I left it. Anyway, after I shut them off, I figured I would try the turn signal, and they worked! Can someone explain why that would happen. Makes no sense to me.

My wipers still didn't work though. The next day I swapped the wiper motor relay with the wiper washer relay (the washer had worked prior to all this btw). After I swapped them, the wipers worked. But in keeping with the strangeness, the washer worked too. ??? I can only figure that the contacts were dirty and by removing them and setting them back, the contacts got clean.

The bottom line, everything works fine now. Oh, execpt my dome light. That will be looked at another day.

1999 3.0 4x4: Boy do I have one for you all. My hazards slowly quit working some time ago. But at first before they totally went out, they would work only when the steering column was in the up position. After a few months then nothing. Then the turn signals slowly over time would flash a few time then stop, then at the same turn start again, then stop, ETC.... Then they just stopped. Changed the flasher unit at $33.00 which on this year and only this year ( a better idea) was also the relay swithc. No change. So changed the the switch in the column that also works the wipers at $34.00, and no change. Nothing in fact now my wipers don't work either. Now I have been having problems with the wipers also. The recall I did some years ago fixed the problem of them coming on by themselves, but when it rain heavy they would just stop working unless I put them on high. After a few minutes of this they would work again at intemitent or slow. I also lost my washer motor. It would work but not pump and fluid. Changed the pump motor but that didn't help anything. Changed the wiper motor, that didn't change anything. So yesterday I was tinkering again and moved the relays under the hood. Two of them are for wipers. There are about five relays that are the same. I pulled out all of them and put them in different locations. Now my wipers work, and the washer, but still no turn signals or hazards. The 1999 year was notorious for electrical problems. So you all keep plugging away, I am.

Am not having a problem with '99 Ranger, but would like a louder flasher . Can't hear with A/C on. Anyone of a product and source?-- newtoranger.
