Default Inertia switch has 3 wires

Trying to help my neighbor with his '99 Ranger with a V6. On a few occasions it wouldn't start and required towing. I checked power to the fuel pump relay and inertia switch and ended up bypassing the switch to get it to run. He used the truck today and informed me that the check engine light came on and that the truck felt like it was crapping out on the way home.
His switch has 3 wires, green/yellow stripe, pink/black stripe and a smaller gauge gray/ pink stripe. What does the small wire do and what should I do with it for the time being. Would it have anything to do with the engine crapping out?

Thanks for your help...
