How old is your battery? If it is the original..it is well due to be replaced. Old batteries will work better in warm temps...and not so in the cold. Same is true of new good batteries...but they usually won't let you down in the cold for the 1st years.

If that may seem to be a solution...i am not gonna get into this.....'Which Brand of Battery'.....I've seen heated discussions over things like this...believe it or not!!! You will get suggestions from many. Hopefully you know a mechanic/shop/dealer who you trust and can ask their advise. Many people that take their vehicle to a shop/dealer/garage/etc. for the simplest things curiously keep going to different ones? A good/honest mechanic will appreciate return costumers..is only natural. People who don't have a clue and go somewhere else every time something goes are cleverly screwing themselves as the years go by. Batteries can be load tested...often for free.

It is due to low voltage while cranking the engine. That low voltage screws with the electronics that control the door locks and other things. It is a sign your battery is weak.

I could tell my battery was weak by the way my truck turned over when the weather was cold. It was the original battery in a 2003 Ford pickup with over 80,000 miles on it. I replaced the battery and now my door locks do not lock when I start the vehicle in cold temperatures. Yes it has been cold here in middle Georgia. I hope this helps others with the same problem.

I have had my battery tested and Ford dealership says it is fine, but tonight it completely died on me, I charged it up and I am letting the truck run for a bit. We have had a nasty storm here in Southwestern Ontario and I haven't had the truck running in 3 days. When I started it up immediately the passenger door locks, and it was idling under 500 rpm's which tells me something is wrong especially when the truck is cold. It usually runs over 1000 rpm's until the engine has warmed up some. A friend tells me the door locks could be some type of short but I don't know why it only happens in the cold weather. I love my truck but right now it is pissing me off. Thanks for all the replies to question and I do hope Ford figures this one out soon.

As I stated earlier, I've had the same problem. I went and got a new battery for my truck for the first time (2002, 142,000 miles) and it no longer locks the doors when I start it. Thanks everyone! I am surprised how long the battery lasted weak without completely going dead b/c last winter it locked the doors all the time without ever once leaving me stranded with a dead battery. I guess the motorcraft batteries are good quality.

Once again, the doors are locking because the low votlage condition of your weak battery while cranking is screwing with the electronics module that control the door locks. It has nothing to do with short circuits.

You can replace the weak battery, or you can keep not believing all of us and look for something else.
